Elvis (2022) review
The King of Rock & Roll. The greatest selling solo artist of all time Elvis Presley. It was only a matter of time before he got his very own biopic right? well Elvis has arrived and it's full or razzle-dazzle and lots of stylistic moments. Directed by Baz Lhurmanm Elvis tells the incredibly story of Elvis Presley including the many highs and lows of his extraordinary life and musical career. Right off the bat Lhurmann's style of constant cuts and quick edits becomes almost unwatchable in an opening 40 or so minutes that is quite frankly pretty painful to watch, there is no time for anything to settle as cuts and flashes fly across the screen second after second. It soon mellows out and it is here where Elvis gets the love, attention and detail he deserves. This is very much a movie of two halves with the second and third act in particularly are just sublime with great performances and storytelling, not to mention the transformation of Elvis from young promising star to Las Vegas conqueror was utterly fascinating.
Elvis is a good movie that's for sure but it's not perfect. It's full of some great stuff it really is but it feels like it's also missing quite a lot. There's a great movie in here somewhere but unfortunately I don't think it made the big screen this time around. Perhaps a longer version if available would suffice but given that the movie is already quite lengthy I doubt we'd see a longer version clocking in at over 3 hours. So with everything said is Elvis worth checking out? definitely! especially if you were / are a Elvis fan be that now or if you grew up listening to his music. Elvis may have left the building but his music will always live on no matter what.
