Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness review
Be warned there will be SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
I really liked the original Doctor Strange. It was unique and a real kickstarter of magic and sorcery in the MCU. It is now 2022 and an Infinity War later can this sequel which promises utter madness and chaos in the multiverse hence the title. Benedict Cumberbatch returns as Doctor Stephen Strange who is still not the Sorcerer Supreme. Our journey opens up within a dream as we see another version of Stephen Strange, one who is seen protecting a young woman who later we come to known as America Chavez. She is extremely important to the overall plot as she possesses the power to open and close portals to different universes. She is being hunted however and this leads to her meeting the Strange of the main MCU timeline as the two go from Earth 838 which is a future distopia type all the way to an Earth that has been destroyed thanks to the multiversal jumping around.
It is in these multiversal jumping moments where Doctor Stange really shines. It's visually stunning during these moments as Strange and America Chavez are bounced around from universe to universe including an animated universe all the way to a universe where they are nothing but paint. These are the best moments of the movie as when the multiverse itself isn't the main focus Doctor Strange really suffers from just being boring. Not to the point of you'd want to leave or anything but when it slows down it just feels mundane. That being said these moments are few and far between as the action is ramped up pretty quickly featuring some truly immense visual effects and action set-pieces. The real star of the show here in my opinion is Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda (Scarlet Witch) her entire story arc is truly fascinating and sometimes utterly visceral. She plays her role perfectly as the more emotional beats of the movie belong to her and her alone.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is purely a Sam Raimi movie at it's core. It is full of scares aplenty and plenty of the beats that Sam Raimi is known for. This movie is leading up to something bigger, much bigger in the future. So with all that being said is it any good? yes it's quite good but does suffer from some scrip oddities and painfully slow moments. But with all of that being said MCU fans will love this as it's pretty much more of the same that they've come to know and love which isn't a bad thing by any means. There is also plenty of cameos and fanservice moments that will make you give at least a little smirk of enjoyment. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness feels sort of like a missed opportunity in some aspects. The madness is very little here which was disappointing. I really hoped they would've went just a little more mad here but alas what we got wasn't all that bad either. The future is very exciting for the MCU especially what happens in the famous MCU post-credit scene. If you love the MCU then check this out if not then well I don't think it's really worth your time without at least some knowledge of the MCU from the past few years.
