Batwoman 3x8 : Trust Destiny review

Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.

Batwoman returns from it's mid season hiatus with an interesting episode to say the least. Beginning with a flashback we see the real Pamela Isley (Poison Ivy) alive and in the flesh well before Batman got to her and took her out. She is seen coming out of a wooded area as Renee Montoya and another cop arrive on the scene. Renee has her gun pointed at Ivy but refuses to pull the trigger instead asking her why she is doing what she is doing. Ivy responds with the usual things you'd expect to hear from here before killing the other cop in cold blood with one of her vines. These flashbacks are a running thread throughout the episode as we see a lot more of Ivy and Renee Montoya. We're soon back with Sophie, Luke and Ryan and after what happened with Marcus in the last episode they've been forced to work out of Renee Montoya's underground, almost sewer like office as they're locked out of the bat-cave and Wayne Enterprises. They're working on saving Mary when a clue from Renee leads to them all coming to the conclusion that they need to find the original Ivy's body and take the serum inside of her that Batman created to keep her dormant. But doing so will they actually help Mary?? and even if successful will Ivy wake up when she gets the serum taken out of her??

Ryan gets a call from Marcus soon after where he says he now feels alive more than ever and is planning on making Gotham his. He shouts it from the rooftops..literally, he tells Ryan that he will see her soon which is where Ryan learns of a party he is throwing later that night. It's very exclusive and turns out to be a lot more deadly than first thought. Donning 3 different disguises Sophie, Luke and Ryan crash the party in hope of getting back into the bat-cave to get some info Batman had stored and recorded about Ivy and what happened during the time of him burying her alive. They end up getting inside and into the bat-cave after some pretty nifty detective work that shouldn't have worked at all but nevertheless once they get into the cave they learn that Ivy was buried close to their surroundings in an area with no water, sun or anything else that would trigger her waking up. Where could she be??

The episode draws to a close as Mary arrives at the party and goes right after Marcus almost trying to seduce him. He gets drawn in as below in the bat-cave Ryan gets a light bulb above her head and suggests that Ivy is buried close which means she is buried right here in the bat-cave's lower area. So they all set off to go and look for her, Batwoman doing all the legwork by isolating a heartbeat that belongs to Ivy deep below the bat-cave. They eventually end up finding the villain who had been buried under an abundance of branches and twigs, Batwoman cuts her free and takes the serum from her body, with it now in her possession and Mary upstairs it's now or never. And now or never is the term as Batwoman gets into quite a scuffle involving Mary and Marcus but actually ends up injecting Marcus with the serum which completely evaporates him of all fluids in his body almost wilting him. Mary gets away again leaving everyone else to do some clean up work. The episode isn't over yet however as it ends back with Sophie at Renee Montoya's office. It turns out that she has been playing everyone this entire time, from Alice to Batwoman she has been playing them all. All this time she has had the Joker's buzzer which she tasked Ryan and Alice with finding, she was basically hanging it over their heads as blackmail when in reality all she wanted was the body of one Pamela Isley which just so happens to be missing when the camera cuts back to where it previously was. Montoya just played everyone like a fiddle in quite the interesting plot point to be honest. I really hope we get the original Ivy back and Mary's version is gone soon because along with Marcus it just isn't working for me at all. Infact it's more of a let down more than anything else. This season should strictly be about Montoya and Ivy as the background, setup and reasonings are all there. As for the episode I did like it just not as much as I probably could or should've. It wasn't horrible by any means and ended on a pretty interesting note. Renee Montoya's twist was actually unexpected a nice change of character for her. Let's just hope it can now push on and be better in the back half of this season.
