West Side Story (2021) review

I love musicals. I really do. So when it was announced that Steven Spielberg was remaking West Side Story I was genuinely excited to say the least. And after seeing it I can say that my excitement was matched in a big, beautiful and bold way. West Side Story tells the story of a forbidden love of two people caught up in a gang war between two completely different ethnic groups in 1950's New York City. Starring Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler as Tony (Anton) and Maria West Side Story is tragic tale of love, loss and gang warfare. The songs are amazing, the choreography is stellar and overall West Side Story is just cinematic magic that needs to be seen on the biggest screen possible.

West Side Story is not only beautifully directed and acted it's core elements of love, loss and tragedy are all handled in such a soft and elegant way that you'll easily get swept up in it's charm. And charming it is even if some scenes do get really intense one scene especially towards the big finale was a bit shocking and rather dark so there is a lot to sink your teeth into here and it isn't for everyone but if you're a fan of musicals, amazing dancing set-pieces and a overall story about forbidden love then this is the movie for you.

West Side Story is a romantic tragedy, it is impactful, wonderful and jaw dropping all wrapped in one neat little package. If you like musicals you will adore this. If musicals aren't your thing than there really isn't going to be much here for you but as a whole Steven Spielberg has done West Side Story justice here with some brilliant film making. Ansel Elgort and the rest of the cast do a stand up job but for me it was Rachel Zegler who stole the show every time she was on screen. Her gentle caring nature, strong Puerto Rican attitude and angelic like voice all made her version of Maria to be one for the ages. Miss this at your peril.
