Batwoman 3x7 : Pick Your Poison review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
The mid season finale of Batwoman has come and gone and with it we got the true big bad, Poison Mary and a whole lot of family tension. The episode begins as Ryan and Marquis meet up to seemingly talk about working together to overthrow their mother Jada Jet. Things take a turn for the worst for Marquis however it turns out that all this was just a ruse to get him into custody. Jada thanks Ryan and says that she will help her with her problem which I will talk about a bit later. We're soon back with Mary and Alice whom we saw leave together at the end of last week. Mary is herself now given it is at night and not only has she gotten rid of her phone so that she and Alice can't be traced but she now also has a shoot on sight alert against her.
Back with Ryan and her mom now and the thing Ryan wants in return for helping bring in Marquis is an antidote for Mary that will restore her to her normal self and rid her of the Ivy infestation. With the cure being made by the company Jada hired to freeze and put people in cryostasis we see that is what Jada has in mind for her son Marquis. He is seen strapped to a table struggling to talk / breath. Things take a bit of a dark turn however when he breaks free from his restraints and goes on a rampage within Gotham. His targets include a nurse, a worker from Wayne Enterprises and more. His end goal?? well that is to begin a Hostile Takeover of Wayne Enterprises.
The episode draws to a close at the before mentioned Wayne Enterprises where we see Marquis walking into the main room to confront Luke Fox. Luke who wants nothing to do with him has a worker attempt to escort him out of the building but when the worker gets stabbed in the neck with Luke's dads pen Luke attempts to fight back but gets badly beaten up by Marquis. Ryan is soon on the scene and confronts her brother and while this scene was fine Marquis's attempts to be this universes's Joker just isn't doing it for me. He comes across as completely and utterly lame with nothing that The Joker possesses. We do learn that Marquis has the cure for Mary however but he wants something in exchange. He wants Ryan to sign over Wayne Enterprises and all her stocks to him so that he can begin his Hostile Takeover like I mentioned earlier. Ryan does as he asks and gets the cure but it turns out to be all for nothing in the end. As Batwoman revs up her attempt to find Mary and Alice she ultimately finds them thanks to Mary using a card that gets her coffee of all things. When Batwoman confronts Mary she is shocked to learn that Mary doesn't want help. She practically flat out denies any help and even destroys the cure with her vines in Batwoman's hands. So that's it then? well no as the episode ends at Mary's clinic and firstly we see Ryan, Sophie and Luke watch the news which is showcasing Marquis and how he is the new CEO of Wayne Enterprises. Ryan signed it all over for nothing it seems but Luke says it was for Mary which is very true but this was just deflating to be honest. In the news report we see Marquis sporting a spot of hair that is colored purple in what was a nice Joker nod. The episode finally ends as Mary dons a very comic accurate like Poison Ivy dress as the back half of the season beckons. If my review seems short here its because I really didn't like this episode as a whole. It was flat, boring and Marquis's attempts at being The Joker was poor. Mary's Ivy costume does look good however and I do have hope for the back half of the season but for now I'm just disappointed. This season started off well and just seemed to get worse and worse which is such a shame. Batwoman now goes on a hiatus and will return with Legends of Tomorrow on January 12th. Until then Batwoman!
