Batwoman 3x6 : How Does Your Garden Grow? review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
After much thought about last weeks episode of Batwoman I feel as if the ending where it was revealed that Ryan's brother Marquis possibly becoming this universe's version of The Joker is not only absurd but it's flat out ridiculous. That being said I'm willing to give it a chance but there is sadly no developments when it comes to Marquis in this episode which was disappointing. The episode opens up as the first victim of a new and seemingly improved Poison Ivy gets found in a shed like area. It's a man named Chris Hayner and he isn't actually dead rather he has been drowned in honey which has lead to bees covering him, stinging him all over. Renee Montoya arrives and takes a sample from the crime scene. She soon pays Ryan and Alice a visit at the bat-cave where Alice plays coy about what is going on. She has a strong feeling that Mary is infected with some sort of form of Poison Ivy and y'know what? she is absolutely right in thinking so. Mary soon turns up at the bat-cave and handcuffs herself to a table stating that she is no longer really in control and is doing this to protect and keep people safe in Gotham. Ryan and Luke can't believe that Mary would even do these things but after digging into her tinder profile Luke learns that she had previously been chatting with the guy we saw covered in honey at the beginning of the episode. It all seems to connect together but it does turn even darker when they learn of another victim. This victim is the same guy who we saw freeze Sophie's sister a few weeks back. After Batwoman and Alice get to him and save him from becoming a living turnip which Alice says Renee surfaces again and is heard arguing with Ryan whom she thinks is with holding information from her. It gets pretty intense here and even more so when the victim goes missing only for Ryan to learn that Alice let Sophie interrogate the guy herself as she digs for information on who, what and why when it comes to her sisters involvement and the death of three of her friends.
Batwoman arrives to interrupt Sophie but as she does he ends up getting murdered while they're off in the distance talking. Only his last cries of pain can be heard as he was seemingly taken out by the Black Glove. He did have some info to share with Sophie however. It says that Tommy Elliot's mother started the Black Glove along with many other parents in Gotham. It's completely off the grid and acts in the shadows much like another criminal organization in Gotham. If you know you know, if you don't then you needn't not know. Back at the bat-cave and we see that the trigger to awaken this version of Poison Ivy within Mary is sunlight. Much like sunlight does for a plant this awakens Ivy as she takes out Luke. Alice is seemingly along with this for no real reason even at the end of the episode they both leave together. What's her end game??
The episode draws to a close at the Botanical Gardens where Mary has not only lured Renee Montoya but also Batwoman and Batwing. Luke who is now in control given he has his AI failsafe back with him looks extremely weak in the fight against Ivy. But it makes sense because his fail safe isn't actually with him it was removed well before he evens suited up. As for Batwoman she gets swung around but in the end nothing really comes out of this situation. Ivy just ends up leaving with Alice like I just mentioned. A bit anti-climactic. As for Renee Montoya she tried to get through to Ivy but she says that the real Pamela Isley is buried deep beneath Gotham her veins scrapping together like sandpaper, Batman is to blame for this as we know. I'm guessing we will see this version of Ivy sooner rather than lately as Mary as Ivy just didn't really do it for me to be honest. With that being said we're soon back with Renee again at a bar and she and Sophie actually end up spending the night together in throws of passion as we see them both kissing. The episode ends with Mary and Alice leaving in a car like I said but we also see Ryan ringing up her mom for help. Help with Ivy? or help with Marquis? we'll have to wait and see and that was the episode. And sadly like last week I really didn't like this one. Mary as Ivy just didn't do anything for me and while Batwoman and Batwing fighting alongside one another in the Botanical Gardens was a cool sight it just overall felt mediocre. A shame really as this season started off really well in my opinion. I can only hope it improves next week.
