Supergirl 6x11 : Mxy in the Middle review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Finally a really good episode of Supergirl after what felt like a couple of weeks of not bad episodes per say but just really quite bland ones. The episode takes off right where last weeks ended just as Supergirl called out to Mister Mxyzptlk for help with Nxyly who had trapped her in ice rendering her helpless. The magical imp arrives and fights off Nxyly but even he struggles against her stating things like how she tried to destroy the fifth dimension and how he was there when she was imprisoned in the first place. He does manage to free Supergirl who within an instant flies them both off high into the sky landing back at the team's HQ. There we learn a lot from Mister Mxyzptlk. He tells of Nxyly's true plan which is to gain control of an all powerful stone that has the power to control literally anything. There is a couple of draw backs however and they include a lack of power, 7 totems ranging from the power of courage to the power of love and a magical imp (Mxyzptlk) to power Nyxly's crystal ball that she will use to track down said totems. Mxyzptlk tells everyone this in musical form which was very fitting for his character as he is a bit of annoyance but overall this was a pretty delightful scene as a whole. Speaking of delightful however we get a TON more info on Lena Luthor and her true mother a woman named Elizabeth Walsh. When Lena heads to the town where she was born she is met with a ton of hesitation from those that live and work there. Why?? more on that in a bit..
Back at the team's HQ now and with Brainy at work on a handcuff that will cut off Nyxly's magical powers so that she can be restrained Nia is struggling with her guilt over taking Nxyly's deal thus setting her free and back into the world of the living. She doesn't know whether to tell Kara about what happened or not and it's a thread that hangs for a lot of the episode. She ends up telling Kara who knows what she did was a mistake and that mistakes happen. So Nia needn't had to have worried as really she only took the deal to see her mom even if it was for only one day. Speaking of Kara her and the rest of the superfriends get tasked with taking down a giant magic infused cat wrecking havoc in the city. They all work together and eventually trap the cat inside of something that is just pure magic. But that's not what is really interesting here what's really interesting here is what follows with not just Nxyly but also Lena.
The episode draws to a close as we learn more about Lena's mom like I mentioned earlier. Her name was Elizabeth Walsh and whenever Lena mentions her name various residents of the town called Fortune Bay all seem to panic and get extremely defensive. That is because as Lena soon finds out from a local bar owner whose mom was friends with Lena's mom practiced witchcraft and magic. Pretty dark stuff eh? it also turns out that Lena's mom was pretty much the leader of a group of 3 women who practiced witchcraft which in turn led to them killing a man using their newfound powers. Not believing what she is hearing Lena seemingly hightails it and leaves but after a phone call with Andrea she decides to go back and find out more. She meets a former friend of her mom's who tells her that although Lena is a brilliant scientist and Luthor she is also very much her mothers daughter. Could Lena be the one to ultimately defeat Nyxly with magic?? after all magic is the only way to beat magic so the clue and hints were all there when Nyxly said that last week. Speaking of Nxyly she strikes up a deal with Supergirl and co. Hand over Mister Mxyzptlk and everything will work out fine. Make her angry and refuse things will get ugly. Of course Supergirl and co come up with a plan C. Disguise Nia as Mxyzpltk using Brainy's disguise technology and trick Nyxly hand cuffing her in the process. It's not surprising however when the disguise doesn't exactly work and it breaks down thanks to the energy from the crystal Nxyly is carrying. They only went and made her angry didn't they? yes they did and in turn Nyxly unleashes a giant dragon on everyone as they're all binned together by various objects. While things don't look like they're going to end well Mister Mxyzptlk arrives and enters the crystal which somehow depowers Nyxly. This isn't enough to stop her however as later she says the hunt for the totems is still underway and along with Mitch from last week the totem of courage is up first. So yeah this review was a bit all over the place perhaps but that was much like this episode. It was all over the place but it was thoroughly enjoyable. The most enjoyable in weeks to be honest. Lena's new venture is very interesting indeed and the hunt for the 7 totems which has been done before *cough* legends of tomorrow season 3 *cough* it will be interesting to see how it all unfolds as Supergirl ends the episode stating that there is no more holding back when it comes to Nyxly and stopping her. Strong and confident Supergirl is what I live for. All in all this was the best episode since the show returned and it gives me some serious hope that it can continue this trend and keep going until the season's end. Nice to see you flying high again Supergirl!
