Stargirl 2x7 : Summer School : Chapter Seven review

Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.

After a season best episode last week Stargirl has a pretty tough task following it up this week. Will it be just as good?? the episode begins with Yolanda whom this episode heavily focuses on. We see her inside a church at confession. She talks about the devil and how he is real. She also mentions how if she kills the devil will that make her a bad person?? the priest gets alarmed by this of course and calls Yolanda's mother who we see a bit later on. Back in Blue Valley and the 4th of July is just a day away. The town is decorated in all sorts of patriotic stuff as Cameron asks Courtney if she wants to help him decorate an old spot him and his father used to decorate. Courtney agrees and spends time with him as Yolanda's descent into complete and utter madness is slowly becoming too much for her to handle. This leads into a scene at the diner where Yolanda works where we see the same kid from last week and earlier this season. The kid who is actually Eclipso in a twisted disguised form causes one of Yolanda's co workers to pour coffee all over a customer. Yolanda tries to comfort the child but he soon disappears vanishing within an instant.

It's all weighing on Yolanda as at school we see her memories of Brainwave and Henry coming back to haunt her..literally. She sees Henry outside her classroom and she gives chase. When she gets close she confronts Henry who just tells her that he is burning, on fire and she did nothing for him, not even apologize. Courtney soon comes to her friends aid and tells Yolanda that it'd be a good idea to tell the rest of the JSA what happened between her and Brainwave. So that's what they do. They all go and have a team meeting of sorts where Yolanda confesses that she did murder Brainwave. Rick says he would've done the same thing but he couldn't even kill Grundy even though he killed his parents. As for Beth she gets freaked out by this and doesn't really say much other than that she is sorry. Yolanda stands up in the middle of the room and says that she knows the JSA will have to kill Eclipso and she will have to be the one to kill him because she is the only killer in the JSA. Pretty deep stuff here to be honest. But it's really fascinating to watch unfold. With all of Yolanda's demons out in the open she returns to the church where she confesses her murder. When the priest doesn't answer however she is shocked to see that Brainwave does..

The episode draws to a close as we not only learn just why Yolanda has been having visions of Brainwave and his killing throughout the season but also a pretty big decision is made by Yolanda. One that will surely affect everything going forward. Brainwave attacks Yolanda tossing her around the church. He tells her that before he died he transferred some of his mind into hers and that is why she has been having the visions of killing him and hallucinations of Henry also. Stargirl soon turns up and saves Yolanda for the time being but ultimately it is she who must face up to her demons if she is to overcome them. She dons her Wildcat costume again and kills Brainwave again as he falls to the ground changing once again into Henry who exhumes fire from his body. When everything settles Courtney and Yolanda have a heart to heart and this is where Yolanda quits the JSA vowing to never wear the Wildcat costume ever again. Courtney is left astounded by this decision, even more so when her calls go unnoticed and Yolanda's mom tells her to not phone anymore. The JSA is officially down one member going forward and that is something I didn't expect going into this episode. What a great little narrative twist. But the episode isn't over yet as we see the young kid again this time outside of Beth's home where we see him just laughing. Uh-oh it looks like Beth is in trouble going forward. The episode ends right there and then and Stargirl does it again. After an amazing episode last week this episode was just as good. The focus on Yolanda was honestly fascinating and very well put together. The narrative sidetrack of her leaving the JSA was unexpected and overall this season of Stargirl while not perfect has been really damn solid and entertaining thus far. Long may it continue until the end of the season.
