Stargirl 2x1 : Summer School : Chapter One review

Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.

Stargirl returns for it's second season and after what was a truly excellent first season I have high hopes that this season can be just as good if not better. We begin decades previous as we see a little girl named Rebecca wanting to go to a kid's birthday across the street. Her mom however tells her no so she just goes and sits out on the porch's swing chair. A mysterious young boy soon appears and basically entices the young girl to attend the party. When she does go outside of the house he then tells her to steal one of the gifts that was for the person whose birthday it was. The girl takes one of the gifts and it's a doll. A doll that appears to be covered in dirt. It's eyes also glow red. She drops it gasping but things soon take an even darker turn as the girl and the audience are about to find out that the mysterious young boy is infact Eclipso or at least the physical manifestation. We don't see it happen but Rebecca is seemingly killed as her mom is soon heard screaming loudly looking over to the area where we last saw Rebecca. This was an interesting beginning that showcased a sort of origin of Eclipso that was pretty dark. It looks like Stargirl and the rest of the Justice Society of America will have their hands full in the future with Eclipso.

The episode soon truly begins with Stargirl who we see patrolling Blue Valley with the rest of the JSA. It turns out ever since the defeat of the Injustice Society Blue Valley has been extremely quiet and low in crime. The JSA aren't needed as much as before even though Courtney is still extremely excited to be Stargirl. The rest of the team all take off leaving Courtney alone to patrol before she goes home and stays up all night looking over old JSA villain files. Pat soon enters the room and tells her that she needs to lay off the Stargirl stuff and take some time for herself. Stargirl isn't a career she needs something else to do. Not phased by his comments Courtney is as eager as ever to be Stargirl. The following morning Mike comes back from his morning paper route and finds out that Mike has booked a 2 week vacation for the entire family. Both Courtney and Mike are against this but are out voted on the matter by their parents and the dog which was a really funny moment. So it's settled a 2 week vacation is set in motion. That is until Courtney who on the last day of school before summer holidays gets into a scuffle with Artemis but we also learn that her grades haven't exactly been great at all. The school principal suggests that she attend summer school in an attempt to up her grades as she heads into junior year. So the vacation is off much to Pat's dismay but for Courtney and Mike they don't seem to mind.

The episode draws to a close back at Courtney's home where during the night an intruder is in the house. Courtney wakes up and with her staff in hand she sees said intruder. It is none other than the daughter of the Green Lantern. It's not stated which Green Lantern she is the daughter of but she is wearing the ring and is using the battery. A fight actually breaks out between Stargirl and Green Lantern as Pat says Courtney is having one heck of a wild day. So a Green Lantern has finally been introduced into the CW / Arrowverse which is super exciting. The episode ends with one final big narrative twist. We see Cindy (Shiv) who the JSA thinks is dead after what happened in last season's finale. Alive and well she not only has Eclipso but she has access to the ISA HQ and is setting a plan of her own in motion. A plan that includes forming her own type of ISA team with people like Artemis and even Mike. Mike? it seems so as Cindy lays out various pictures onto a table with Mike's photo being the last one to be placed on the table. Eclipso is ready to get recruiting as Cindy agrees the episode ends. The episode had a lot more going on throughout also like Yolanda's trouble dealing with killing Brainwave, Rick feeding some sort of creature by a lake?? and Beth learning that her parents are getting divorced. All in all though this was a great way to pick up where season 1 ended. There is going to be a lot to look forward to here with so much sure to be happening. Welcome back Court it's good to be in your company again!
