Free Guy review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Welcome to Free City a video game creation in the same vain as games like Fortnite and Apex Legends. Starring Ryan Reynolds Free Guy tells the story of a NPC (non player character) named Guy a regular man who works as a bank teller and does the same thing every day. He wakes up goes to work meets his friends and goes to sleep only to repeat it all again the following day. Guy makes a breakthrough when he sees what he thinks is the girl of his dreams. A girl and a pair of sunglasses end up being the key to him breaking away from the shackles of his mundane life to live his life to the fullest. Free Guy's story in the real world follows a guy named Keys and a girl named Millie who before the creation of Free City had made a game of their own from the ground up with a very special code. Unfortunately for them a colleague ends up taking the code for himself and using it to create Free City. All that remains from the original code and AI is a far off in the distance area that is masked to players and Guy who slowly but surely becomes more and more advanced as the movie goes on. Outside of Free City the relationship between Keys and Millie is actually really well done and develops really well culminating in a cheesey but rather sweet ending.
If you're a fan of video games you're going to be in for a treat with Free Guy. The story is a bit bland at times but it's pulled together effortlessly by Ryan Reynolds who carries the movie on his shoulders and dashes straight for the finish line. He is lovable, funny and just highly entertaining as Guy. Speaking of highly entertaining that also goes for Taika Waititi who plays the guy who stole the code and AI that he used to create Free City. He plays the egotistical maniac perfectly and is a great polar opposite to Ryan Reynold's Guy.
Free Guy isn't perfect by any means but it wasn't made to be the perfect movie. In some aspects it's imperfect much like it's creation of Free City that ends up meshing together into a wild and chaotic experience. Free Guy is a highly entertaining movie especially if you're into video games. It's full of references throughout and even features some truly unexpected cameos. This is as much of a summer blockbuster as you can get that you'll want to experience again and again.
