Superman & Lois 1x13 : Fail Safe review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Another week and yet another great episode of Superman & Lois. This weeks episode begins with plenty of little tidbits of info. We learn that Morgan Edge is in custody at the D.O.D, Leslie who was his assistant is in the wind for now and that Ex-Kryptonite which Morgan Edge had been using on his subjects during his experiments is to extracted from the mines in Smallville so that nobody can ever use it again. With Clark now letting John Henry Irons stay onside at the Kent Farm the two attempt to bond outside of their alter egos with Clark offering him a lifetime supply of food for saving him. It'll be interesting to see if this friendship becomes a big part of the show going forward. As for the boys they go off to school where a special assembly is taking place to discuss Morgan Edge and his intentions for Smallville. With everything now out in the open Johnathan especially gets quizzed about his grandfather's involvement in the whole ordeal. Johnathan manages to dodge some questions but eventually he does end up getting asked to leave school with Tegan. A girl who he has fancied for some time throughout this season. As Johnathan ends up ditching not only the assembly but school itself to tag along with Tegan. As for Jordan he too ditches school with Sarah as the two go to a private property and end up actually getting arrested but more on the boys a little bit later.
Back at the Kent Farm and as Clark and John are talking John's Kryptonian search device goes off while Clark hears a lot commotion. This turns out to be Leslie who is attempting a break into D.O.D to get Morgan Edge out. She gets stopped right in her tracks as Superman and Steel team up for the second week in a row to stop her before she even reaches the D.O.D facility which is already on high alert. With two major threats in Edge and Leslie now out of commission surely everything is ready to go back to normal right? well you'd think but Clark, Lois and even Lois's dad still have a lot to get through. Firstly there is the problem of the boys and while Johnathan's day with Teagan was a total bust thanks to her only wanting to get information out of him about what happened Jordan and Sarah were having a great time together until being arrested. Sarah who is still feeling down thanks to the entirety of Smallville basically targeting and blaming her family for her dad basically lobbying for Edge to start up work in Smallville. Kyle Cushing even gets pushed aside by his co-workers who along with the mayor say that he needs to talk some time away from his job as chief of the fire station / crew. The mayor at first tells Lana and Kyle that he will fix things but of course he is only saying this and doing the opposite to save his own backside when it comes to re-election. So yeah it's all a bit much for Sarah nowadays but being with Jordan helps her a lot and vice versa too. So when they both get arrested Lois and Lana are left to pick up the pieces as the two are let go with a strict and fair warning. Back at home and with the boys now grounded Clark drops a bombshell on both Lois and her dad. General Lane had previously told Superman that he was going to destroy his stockpile of weapons and safety nets he had in place in case Superman ever went rogue. Called project 7734 Clark tells him to not go ahead with his destruction plans instead keep it all in place incase Superman ever turns again. His reasoning?? well..
The episode draws to a close back at the Kent Family home where Clark tells Lois of his worries. He explains how he felt while being turned and says that it felt good to not hold back. It felt good not having to worry about saving the world. Which is way he wants to keep project 7734 in full effect but rather than give the access to the D.O.D he has someone else in mind. And that someone is John Henry Irons who after dealing with Edge and Leslie is now fully intent on starting a new life of his own. He accepts Clark's offer of being the only one with access to taking Superman out if something were to ever happen to him again. But perhaps all is not done after all as throughout the episode we got more flashbacks to a younger Morgan Edge in his Fortress speaking with his father. He gets put through more endure tests and as he grows up to become the man we know today he ultimately tosses his fathers beliefs aside especially so when he refuses to let him meet his mother. At the end of last weeks episode we saw glowing blue energy coursing through Edge's body. Well the episode ends here with that same energy being seen and this time used by Edge who flatlines himself as a way to get guards inside of the cell room. Even when the guards turn up the Kryptonite levels it does little to faze him as he smashes through the prison cell glass walls and shoots off into the sky. Mere moments before he said to himself that his father's way is the only way and with what I can only imagine is The Eradicator inside of him now it's going to be interesting to see how the final 2 episodes of this season unfolds. The final thing we see in the episode is Morgan Edge not even on Earth but instead off planet draining energy from what looks like the sun. Is he ramping up for ultimate eradication?? and if so can Superman survive what is sure to be his toughest test to date? of course he will but I have a feeling he will never be the same afterwards. And that was the episode. Another great entry in what really has been an impeccable season throughout. The conflict and choices between Lois, Clark and her dad were great. The boys learning about the rules and breaking them leading to consequences was great too and overall this show is just on tip top form on a consistent basis. It now unfortunately goes on a bit of a break and will return along season 2 of Stargirl with it's final 2 episodes beginning August 10th. Until then Clark & Lois!
