Space Jam : A New Legacy review

Who remembers the original Space Jam?? starring Michael Jordan who arguably is one of the greatest basketball players to ever step on the court was a fun. family friendly adventure. With 25 years having passed and with this generations best ball player Lebron James in the hot seat can this version of Space Jam destroy it's predecessor's range on the court? the movie begins and almost right away it's clear to see that Lebron James just isn't quite up to the task here. His acting is totally one note and almost monotone at times. It's like he's in one gear and it doesn't change for the entirety of the movie. From his relationship with his son to the friendships he makes with the Looney Toons gang it's all average and while the Looney Toons do bring the comedy there really just isn't enough here to to really stand out.

As for the story overall it's been massively updated from the original with improved technology as expected. From phones, livestreams and video games to importing people into a virtual world to watch the big basket ball game. Speaking of the big basket ball game it comes together thanks to a algorithm played by Don Cheadle who lives inside of Warner Bros servers. This is where the abundance of cameos come from. Everything from DC, Harry Potter and everything in between is both seen and developed upon. As Lebron gets sent to the Toon World to recruit his team it is here where the movie is actually at it's best and most creative as various Looney Toon characters can been seen in movie scenes like Granny in The Matrix and Daffy Duck in the DC Animated world. It's easily the best stretch of the movie and is something that I would've liked to have seen more from. As for the rest of Space Jam : A New Legacy it all comes to a head in the big basket ball game and while it is entertaining it just doesn't exactly leave you wanting more and by the time it ends it's almost like okay? now what? there is plenty of cameos throughout the game too with a number of classic Warner Brothers characters in what is quite frankly laughable bad cosplay. Everyone from Batman to Pennywise can be seen and it's more of a distraction more than anything else.

With everything said Space Jam : A New Legacy isn't all that bad but when compared to the first movie it lacks all the charm and likability of it's main character especially. There is the running narrative of family and being a father here between Lebron and his son but really it's just nothing we haven't seen before. The Looney Toons steal the show with Lola Bunny especially being a stand out. Cameos and references abound Space Jam : A New Legacy isn't a slam dunk but more of a three pointer.
