Legends Of Tomorrow 6x9 : This is Gus review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Legends of Tomorrow returns from it's week hiatus with what may possibly my least favorite episode this show has ever produced. Not only was it nonsensical but it was just flat out random scenes flung together and while there was one or two good scenes as a whole it just wasn't nowhere near the level I expect from this show. The episode begins aboard the waverider as it's Behrad's 25th birthday. After being informed of this by Gideon he heads to the main deck where the rest of the Legends can be seen. Except for Mick who is seen on his phone talking to his daughter who says she needs to see him ASAP. He gets her on board the waverider and it's immediately clear what her problem is. She's pregnant. Heavily pregnant at that. But how did Mick not know his daughter was pregnant? well that's because technically we're in the future. 2023 Vancouver to be exact. Plenty of time has passed for her to become pregnant. Mick who we know was trying to bond with her last season apparently hasn't been in much contact with his daughter who he ends up learning plenty about here. Not only is she a strong feminist, but she's also a vegan now and the father to her unborn child is a guy named Niko who shares a lot of her beliefs. So with the latest Alien pod located in Vancouver 2023 everyone gets to work expect for Ava Mick and his daughter who are left behind on the waverider to mull everything over.
So Vancouver 2023 a nod I'm assuming to this show and all the other DC / CW shows being filmed there. The Legends arrive and immediately we're introduced to Behrad's favorite sitcom show called Bud Stuy. Upon getting a ticket he immediately negates it to everyone getting tickets to the show as his surprise birthday gift. But in reality it's because of the Alien pod soon to be crash landing. Sara, Zari, Nate, Spooner and Astra all play along as they split up into two teams. Sara and Spooner go Alien pod hunting while the others attending a live studio taping of Bud Stuy. But just what is Bud Stuy? it's basically a sitcom about two flat mates who smoke weed and do generally whatever Behrad does given that this show is what is supposed to have formed his personality. As the show is being filmed only Behrad seems to be the one invested in it all even speaking the lines as the actors say them. Bud Stuy is a horrible show by all accounts. It got cancelled pretty early on but that didn't stop Behrad from coming to love it and help it shape his life. As the filming goes on and after Spooner shoots the Alien pod of course it lands right in the middle of the set revealing itself to the cast and everyone watching. It's an Alien much like Beebo or Gizmo from The Gremlins in design. It's not surprising then when it becomes a big hit and bonds with the star of the show Imran's brother who at first just thinks it's a robot / puppet. But in-fact it's actually an Alien that Gary says is called something outlandish name but let's go with Gus-Gus for short. Gus-Gus becomes a overnight sensation on the show and is written into all episodes going forward. This leads to the course of history being changed especially when it comes to Behrad who keeps on changing and changing in this episode. Going from laid back cool guy to higher up business tool who is a shell of his former self. It works and it doesn't work. If we had previously seen posters for Bud Stuy in his room for example I think this would've worked much better. As it is it's just Behrad loving a show which is fine but there was no reasoning for it before this episode. Back aboard the waverider and Mick questions his daughter more on her boyfriend Niko. He ends up getting all kinds of info and goes to see Niko with bad intentions on his mind. Or does he? as when Sara, Ava and Mick's daughter arrive they see the two hugging. They actually get on really well even going as far as to hug it out. It turns out Mick is still reeling from his encounter with the Alien Kayla a few weeks back. He even cries a little which was surprising given his usual macho image. Like I said before this episode is random as it comes and is almost like a parody of itself.
The episode draws to a close back at the studio where the Bud Stuy is filmed. Imran quits the show after being asked by Behrad to do so stating that if he continues to do the show he would've sold out given how much it has changed and morphed since the arrival of Gus-Gus. With the show continuing without him Nate and Zari get to work and begin auditions to play an angry landlord in the show. Nate here with the best line in not only this episode but this season. ''Is this for the CW?'' oh Nate please never change. He ends up getting the job and in the episode filming he twists his own narrative and ends up getting Gus-Gus to himself. Gus-Gus who emits a high screech piercing sound when in danger does this but ends up bonding with Nate who feeds him a jolly rancher. With Gus-Gus now in Legends possession and Imran back on Bud Stuy everything reverts to normal in the timeline. Back aboard the waverider and the Legends throw a special silent party for Behrad. Silent because Nate is still looking after Gus-Gus. The episode ends with two further developments then one being great the other just had me like what??! Zari goes to see the OG Zari and informs her that if she stays inside of the totem OG Zari can go outside into the world of the living even if it isn't for long. OG Zari does so and reunites with everyone which was the highlight of this episode by far. She gets caught up on everything from Ava and Sara's engagement to Gary being an Alien all along which was not surprising and even Mick's daughters pregnancy. The other development has got to do with Mick who it turns out after his encounter with Kayla the Alien has been impregnated by her. Once she had her tentacles inside of his head she layed eggs inside of him which just sounded disgusting. The episode ends right there and then as Mick doesn't even react much but man oh man this was just terrible in so many ways. Easily the worst episode this season and probably one of my least favorite episodes ever. And for a season that I've really enjoyed so far this just doesn't sit well with me at all. The writing was bad, the scenes were random with absolutely no real stakes or threat in Gus-Gus. This isn't Legends Of Tomorrow that I love this is like a poor parody. What follows is the lowest star rating I've ever given to a show or movie which is not something I want to do but this episode had little to no redeeming qualities. I just pray and hope it is better next week!
