Fast and Furious 9 review

The Fast and Furious franchise has never been one to take itself seriously. And for the most part it's worked in its favor with recent entries becoming more and more over the top. So with that being said can F9 actually be any good?? the movie begins with a flashback to that of a young Dominic Toretto along with his dad who is competing in a NASCAR race. It's a pretty standard setup that I won't spoil but it does begin the movie in a fine way. We're into present day soon after as we see Dom, Letty and their adopted son Brian living the retired style life. Past friends soon turn up on their property however with a warning from their boss. A warning that is strong enough to lead Dom and Letty onto a giant world trotting adventure full of chaos and destruction.

The first 30-40 minutes of Fast and Furious 9 has some of the finest action sequences I've seen in recent memory. There's a car and bike chase through a jungle, a literal car leap frog leading to a car being swung around a great ravine and even a chase through a mindfield. It works and it's very thrilling. It is not long after however that the movie just completely falls apart. We meet Jacob Toretto brother to Dom played by John Cena. Turns out he too is also in the same field of work that Dom used to be in which leads to plenty of high octane run ins and action sequences. And while the action scenes go on as the movie chugs along they become more and more ridiculous. Fast movies have always been over the top and absurd but it's just plain ridiculous  here. Dom Toretto and the other characters are literally battered from pillar to post showing no real signs of any injury. I get that not everything has to be super realistic but it's extremely noticeable here and it hurts the movie so much. As for the performances and characters they are what you'd expect especially from Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez. As for John Cena he is extremely bland and dull with a cliche backstory of wanting to escape from his brothers shadow. It's nothing new and for this series it doesn't quite fit.

Fast and Furious 9 is more like a giant comedy at times than an action movie. It's riddled in one liners and self aware moments that are funny at times but at other times they're downright cringe worthy. The action scene at the beginning is well worth checking out like I mentioned but as a whole this is definitely one of the poorest entries into the Fast and Furious saga. Maybe it's time to ride off into the sunset sooner rater than later perhaps??
