Batwoman 2x12 : Initiate Self-Destruct review

Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.

Batwoman returns from it's 1 week hiatus with one of this season's best episodes yet. The episode begins with Black Mask who is talking about masks and what they imply and impose upon people. They're used to hide identities and cover up a person's real side. It all ties back to the old notion that Bruce Wayne is the Mask and Batman is the real person. When Black Mask enters a room in his estate we see Enigma at first but then we see none other than Kate Kane whose face is still wrapped in bandages. She says her name is Kate Kane at first but is soon put under Engima's spell complete with a white mask. Her new identity and memories include being Black Mask's daughter as she is tasked with finding Batwoman and taking her out.

Speaking of Batwoman she gets a call from Sophie who has some pretty drastic news. The Crows are about to reveal Batwoman's identity thanks to some DNA they retrieved in the last episode. Only a few hours remain before the blood tests come back. It's doubly bad as Ryan is also on the criminal database so her DNA will be matched immediately. Batwoman is unfazed by this oddly enough as she is more concerned with finding Angelique and getting her home. This leaves the whole Crow DNA situation to Luke, Mary and Sophie to solve as Batwoman actually ends up teaming up with Alice of all people as the two attempt to get both Angelique and Ocean out of Black Mask's grasp.

The episode draws to a close as both sides of Team Batwoman get to work. Sophie with Luke and Mary's help gets a device that when input into the Crow's main computer can wipe all data relating to Ryan on the criminal database. Mary is there to lure Jacob away so that Sophie can actually get access to the mainframe in his office. Sophie does and even though things don't go quite as planned she eventually is successful and removes all data connecting Ryan to Batwoman and just in time too as the Crows had 100% analysed her blood by this point. As for Batwoman and Alice can you believe they actually bond? even if it's just a little bit? their bonding session doesn't exactly end well however but I'll get to that. Alice even gets to ride in the Bat-mobile but complains and whines about not getting to use Batwoman's toys. The two convene outside of the dock area where now both Ocean and Angelique are being kept to work on developing more Snakebite. Batwoman ends up going inside on her own much to Black Mask's dismay as he is informed over a radio. Kate Kane is in hot pursuit however and a giant fight breaks out between the two as Angelique and Ocean get away. Alice soon comes to the rescue of Batwoman who even though after being saved by her leaves Alice to Kate's dastardly designs. The episode ends as Angelique arrives back at Ryan's apartment with a offer for her. Come with her into witness protection and they can be together and live their lives. Ryan declines stating that she's got unfinished business in Gotham and feels like she is really making a difference in the city. The two seemingly say their goodbyes as it looks like Angelique is leaving the series. She was a really great character who was acted really well by Bevin Bru. Loved the relationship between her and Ryan. Hopefully this isn't the actual end. The episode ends back at Black Mask's estate as Alice is being held by the villain. Kate Kane is present too and looks set to kill her at first but Black Mask instead issues that that Alice be placed in a cell. Kate Kane knocks Alice out as the episodes cuts to the Batwoman logo and it ends right there. This was genuinely a fantastic episode from start to finish. May not sound like it but really it was. Batwoman and Alice's relationship was very fun and this version of Kate Kane is both horrific and menacing. A great entry into season 2 of Batwoman which has had some really interesting episodes of varying quality. Here's hoping it can continue as we head into the final handful of episodes.
