Supergirl 6x5 : Prom Night! review

Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.

Time travel, outdated puns and a wonderful performance from Izabela Vidovic this week's episode of Supergirl is very special indeed. Beginning where last week's ended where Brainy backs up Nia's plan to travel back in time to get some of Kara's DNA. The exact date is May 25th 2009 and after looking at articles from that time we learn that Kenny Lee who was killed way back in season 4's trip to Midvale episode is actually alive. This is because of Crisis which changed many different pieces and aspects of the world. Kenny and Kara are now dating and have formed a duo focused on solving crimes and helping the authorities. So much so that Midvale is now called ''The luckiest place on Earth'', Nia and Brainy are the only ones to go on this trip of theirs as expertly stated by Brainy who is still very much struggling to deal with his emotions. I haven't really mentioned Brainy's problems but they are very evident here as he stress eats and finds it very difficult to emit emotions and cope with life. Nia on the other hand seems to have a blast in 2009 as their outfits and speech reflect the time period. The duo set off in Brainy's legion ship and end up crash landing in 2009 with their landing catching the ear of Kara who just so happened to be out at a diner with Alex and Kenny. They all end up rushing off to see what just happened even though Alex is heavily against what Kara is doing by helping other people. When they arrive Brainy and Nia spin a fake narrative that they're from a dying planet and need help restoring their ship within 24 hours. They also say that they're names are Brandon and Brenda as they try so hard to fit in with 2009 slang and outfits it's all hilariously and really well played.

Time passes and Brainy ends up going with Kenny to fabricate the piece of tech needed for the ship while Nia goes with Kara to her home where she ends up staying for the night. The two share a really cool moment as they showcase their powers to one another with Nia capturing Kara in a bubble as Kara levitates in place. During the night Nia has a dream that involves a pink Cougar. What could it mean? upon waking up she and Kara set off together once again. This dream ties into the villains of this two part episode and they are Aliens with blue skin. The leader named Naxim Tork he is a collector of sorts who parades what he collects. He's like a zoo keeper who uses his trophies to entertain and profit off of. He and another Alien are seen plenty throughout this episode but none more so than during a chase scene that involves Kara, Nia, flying and a young Cat Grant hot on their tails chasing this ''Super'' story. A young Cat Grant? yup that's right as she shows up in Midvale tracking down the story of  ''The luckiest place on Earth''. The actress who plays her is really good here her mannerisms especially are almost identical of the Cat Grant we know and love from this show's early years. The role she plays is also far bigger than I first thought in not only this episode but the next also.

The episode draws to a close as Brainy and Kenny begin the fabrication process at the school via a 3D printer. Kenny leaves to go to class leaving Brainy behind who once again stress eats and tries to get his emotions under control. With the fabrication taking a bit of a long time he leaves the room to get snacks but ends up getting caught by a teacher. Between the time Kenny left and came back Brainy had been recruited by Glee club, Maths and even the baseball coach which was funny. I mean he is a superior intellect after all isn't he? as for Kara and Nia they are out driving when they notice a truck going well over the limit on the road with no sign of slowing down. Upon further inspection they notice that nobody is driving and head right after it. Kara flies out of the car and into the truck but the brakes won't work. The truck flies past Cat Grant and knocks her notes and map off of her car as she now is in on the chase also. Nia ends up in the truck soon after as not only are they being chased by Cat Grant but a school bus lies straight ahead and above them is the ship belonging to Naxim Tork which is invisible to the naked eye. Kara manages to stop the truck with her freeze breath just as a blast from Tork's gun hits the ground in front of them. Everyone gets out of the truck and into Alex's car as Cat Grant once again states her interest and intrigue intent on exposing everything that she has seen. It's going to be very interesting going forward that's for sure. The episode ends as Brainy and Nia learn that their actions have caused an affect that involves Naxim Tork. He is still at large and the final thing we see in this episode is that of Brainy and Nia being captured by the almost bounty hunter like Tork. What of Kara, Kenny and Alex?? well they all have issues of their own like Kara trying to tell Kenny that she wants to go to National City University and Alex feeling lumbered by Kara as she has been put before her always. It's all good stuff and overall this episode was my favorite so far this season. It wasn't as charming or near perfect as the previous Midvale episode way back in season 4 but it was pretty close. The casting of young Kara and Alex is absolutely phenomenal and Brainy and Nia were good here also. All I can now is roll on next week as we Prom again!
