Superman & Lois 1x5 : The Best of Smallville review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Superman and Lois's fifth and final episode until May 18th has come and gone and with it we got plenty of details about what Morgan Edge is really up to and a pretty big reveal of Captain Luthor's relationship with a certain someone from his Earth. The episode begins with Clark narrating about his love for Smallville. From growing up there alongside his parents to ultimately leaving it'll always be a special place to him. Speaking of special the annual Harvest Fest is right around the corner. The Harvest Fest is basically a festival held once a year in Smallville where the community comes together to share, create and just enjoy each others company. At the farm Clark seems really eager about the whole Festival. He's practically giddy with excitement. The following day while at school Jordan winds up getting Sarah to agree to go with him to the Harvest Festival while Johnathan ends up getting dumped by his girlfriend Eliza. Pretty bummed out by this Jordan ends up turning to drinking and partying a bit later in the episode much to the dismay of Clark & Lois.
A couple of weeks back we saw that a woman named Sharon Powell came to see Lois and Chrissy at the Smallville Gazette about her son just up and vanishing while working for Morgan Edge. Well in this episode everything seems to be a-okay as Sharon turns up yet again at the Smallville Gazette with her son Derrick Powell safe and sound. Something is not right as it's clear to see that Derrick and his mom Sharon especially seem sort of scared. Almost as if they were forced to drop the entire story that Lois was currently working on. They both end up leaving choosing not to go ahead with the story instead wanting to leave it all in the past and move on with their lives. As cliche as that sounds it all comes full closure soon enough as while donating things to Lana for the Harvest Festival Derrick excuses himself and goes to a back room in the building. He experiences very similar ticks and twitches that Jordan and Johnathan's friend Tag experienced last week. Derrick rings up someone and asks to see them as he feels himself losing control. And lose control he does as soon enough he is using full blown heat vision to destroy the entire building reducing it to flames. Sharon Powell lingers outside of the building as while Lois is off at the Harvest Fest with Clark, Chrissy begins to dig deeper into just what is happening and while what she finds out isn't exactly surprising it's an interesting twist for the narrative going forward.
The episode draws to a close as Captain Luthor takes it upon himself to get to know Lois Lane a bit more. Why? well because as we learn towards the end of the episode he was actually married to Lois Lane on his Earth. That's right Lois was married to a Luthor and not Clark Kent. And it's the exact same Lois and everything as Luthor himself says while on his ship. He first meets Lois outside of the building that Derrick Powell set a blaze. Soon after they go and get some coffee where he tells Lois that he is a reporter too and seemingly has some dirt to dig on Morgan Edge. Speaking of Morgan Edge what Lois's co-worker Chrissy finds out about Derrick Powell and what just is happening in Smallville is what I expected. Morgan Edge and his workers are resurrecting people before turning them into super strong. super powerful weapons of destruction. The problem is though is that they haven't gotten the transformation perfected yet and this is the case with Derrick Powell whom after a battle with Superman literally kills himself in front of big blue. So just what is left for the episode after this? well there is brother bickering, and the reveal that Lois was married to Luthor on a different Earth. Wherever Lois goes so does Superman states Luthor as the episode nears it's end. The episode ends on a rather somber note for Jordan however as while heading home after spending some time with Sarah he gets blown to the side by Tag. The same Tag who is supposed to be in a special school for meta-humans. Tag is in full rage mode and begins to pummel Jordan demanding answers for what he did to him. The episode ends with one final punch to Jordan before the screen fades to black. And that's that. Overall I did enjoy this episode quite a bit. The narrative throughout was solid and it flowed pretty well. Superman & Lois now goes on a hiatus until May 18th. Supergirl's 6th and final season will take it's time slot so next week I will begin reviewing that. Until May 18th it is then Lois & Clark!
