Supergirl 6x1 : Rebirth review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Supergirl returns for it's sixth and final season. With a jam packed 20 episodes ahead can the season get off to a good start or will it be more of the same that we got in season 5? the episode actually picks up right where season 5 ended with Brainiac-5 left for dead by Lex Luthor. Sporting his comic accurate green skin and features he is soon met by Dreamer who shows up just in the nick of time to save him but that's not before the remaining member of Leviathan shows up. A battle ensues between the technology god like being and all of Team Supergirl which includes Miss Martian and Alex who is on her own path of becoming a hero but more on that later. Supergirl manages to defeat the last member of Leviathan but little do she and everyone else know what Lex Luthor has up his sleeve..speaking of Lex we soon see him talking with his mom about his plans for the world. His plan is already in motion he says as after using Obsidian Platinum's VR tech he has been able to brainwash half of the worlds population into loving him. The other half which are 'non believes' he says he will get rid of. Even his mom looks a tad worried by Lex's words here.
Back at the base and everyone tries to come up with a plan to stop Lex, destroy his satellite and return everyone back to a normal mind state. Both Martian Manhunter and Miss Martian come up with a way to destroy the satellites which involves a Martian ritual called The Binding which is when two Martians combined their minds together. This leads to them both becoming a lot closer in many more ways. As for Lena and Alex they come up with plan to use Myriad to reverse the process of brainwash once all the satellites are offline and destroyed. And finally Supergirl who takes it upon herself to not only turn herself into Lex but it's also sacrifice herself or so it seems at first. Lex is clever and as devious as ever here as now with his newfound abilities he thinks he has the upper hand on Supergirl in fact he knows he does. The two agree to set up a meeting together at The Fortress Of Solitude which houses pretty much everything that Lex despises about Krypton.
The episode draws to a close at The Fortress Of Solitude. We see Alex and Lena go their separate ways out of the Fortress almost boom tubing their way out. Lena goes off to Brainy who helps her with Myriad while Alex goes to Dreamer to find a way to make Lex 'Mortal' again. As for J'onn and Miss Martian they are above the Earth taking the binding to the satellites. As the process begins half of the Earth's population begins to suffer from it's affects at first but soon the satellites are no more as the Martian's ancient ritual is a success. This leaves Lena an opening to use Myriad as the 'Lena Protocol' is put in place inside the Fortress. As for Lex he uses his newfound power to leave Supergirl on the brink of death. Lena's Protocol aids Supergirl by placing her in her Kryptonite based suit which we've seen previously. She also gets healed with some yellow sun power. Lex thinking he has won goes off on a giant victory lap inside of the Fortress complete with Queen's ''We Are The Champions'' playing on full blast. Little does he know that he hasn't won and instead he is left rather dumbfounded as Supergirl and everyone else soon surround him. Dreamer and Alex attempt to shoot him with a ray of energy that will make him mortal but it straight up fails off the bat. A giant battle ensues which some hilariously bad CGI effects but that's not the point here. The real action happens when Alex gets a hand of the gun which houses the blast that will render Lex useless and this time it works. But before she shoots at him Lex manages to use the Phantom Zone projector found in the Fortress. Both Alex and Lex shoot at the same time which leads to Lex being hit and losing his powers but also Lex hitting Supergirl with the Phantom Zone projector. Supergirl disappears before everyone as Lex proclaims that he's won. With Supergirl now out of action and Lex in custody what is next for everyone? well back at their base Alex and J'onn have a conversation about being National City's hero's for the time being. Lena soon enters the room and tells them that she used Myriad once more before returning it. She used it on Lex, her mom and everyone else who knew that Kara was Supergirl. That's a weight off everyone as for now Supergirl is MIA and the city needs protecting. Speaking of Supergirl she is the final thing we see in this episode as she lays in an extremely dark alien planet like area with various figures closing in on her body. This of course is the Phantom Zone that is now her home for the time being. And that was the sixth season's premiere episode. So just how was it? honestly I loved it. Not everything mind you but for the most part this was just a really good time. So much was happening that it was hard to keep up at times. Jon Cryer like before steals the show as Lex Luthor. He makes it look effortless and it helps that it looks like he's having the time of his life as the villainous madman. As for Supergirl herself I didn't expect her to get taken to the Phantom Zone but it was a nice little twist. The city is under Alex and J'onn's protection and I'm sure they'll take good care of it. This final season of Supergirl has potential to be special let's hope it goes that way. A great start!
