Batwoman 2x6 : Do Not Resuscitate review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
This weeks episode of Batwoman begins inside of a lab where testing for the bat toxin cure replication is underway. We see a doctor presiding over two cancer patients of completely different ages. One is a man in his 80's another a young boy. Once this experimental cure is injected into the older man with the hopes of curing his cancer within moments he begins to cough and spew blood everywhere. The head doctor rushes in and demands answers as to why the antidote that was so effect on the bat toxin a few weeks back yet there is zero signs of a break through on creating one of their own. With little to no answers other than it's not possible or they need more time the head doctor takes matters into his own hands and tasks an inmate to help find the person behind the miracle cure and who is it? well it just so happens to be Mary Hamilton. Hamilton Dynamics were known to have synthesized the antidote. Things aren't looking too good for Mary right now. As for Ryan Wilder well things aren't looking much better for her as her Kryptonite infection grows worse and worse with each passing day. So much so that she is rushed to the emergency room by Angelique where she gets bloods taken and prescribed with anti-biotics. Ryan tells the doctor who is overseeing her that a spider bit her in her store room at work as the wound is now pretty severe at this point.
Back on the streets of Gotham and Batwoman 2.0 as she has become to know across media is handling the situation pretty smoothly but is dealing with her Kryptonite infused wound like I mentioned. It causes all sorts of problems for Ryan throughout the episode so much so that when she gets a call from the doctor about her bloods he says that she has radioactive materials in her blood stream. This isn't exactly breaking news to Ryan who goes to do some research in the bat-cave. With Ryan busy focusing on both her health and relationship we see Mary and Jacob out driving. Jacob gets a call stating that the Jack Napier painting that The Crows had successfully gotten last week was a fake which leads them back to square one. Sophie has another solution though and that is to find Alice, because if you find Alice you'll find the person who has the real painting Ocean. The painting is in fact a map of the island Coryana which by the time this episode ends everybody is after. As for Mary and Jacob while driving and talking to Sophie their car ends up getting driven right into by a truck. The man inside is the same man who we earlier saw being asked by the doctor to help him find this miracle antidote. He actually ends up taking both Mary and Jacob to Mary's underground clinic which is where Mary has been practicing medicine and saving lives without Jacob knowing for quite some time now. She actually ends up confessing everything to her dad as before this he barely took much notice of her. This turns out to be a pretty big mistake later on for Mary as Jacob shuts her entire operation down.
The episode draws to a close with Alice and Ocean being interrupted by Sophie who demands that he hands over the painting. He actually ends up giving her the painting which like I mentioned earlier is actually a map of Coryana. Sophie leaves with the map while back at the bat-cave Luke walks in as Ryan is doing some research on Kryptonite. He did not know just how bad she was really infected. Ryan is still keen on helping even more so when Mary manages to get through to Luke before asking for the map to be brought to her location along with a code for Batwoman to come and help. Ryan tries to leave but again is hindered by the infection which is only getting worse by the minute. She does end up leaving and getting to Mary and Jacob's aid but not before Sophie ends up getting put on the spot by a group of men wearing masks. They ask for the map or it's a bullet to Sophie's skull killing her in an instant. Batwoman chooses Sophie and the gang get away with the map leaving the team with no real way of getting Coryana anymore..or is there?? the episode ends with two further developments once again. Firstly there is the blossoming and ultimately fateful downfall of Ryan and Angelique's relationship. A relationship that really was never something that I was a fan of nor did it ever feel truly real enough. Ryan basically outs her girlfriend to The Crows by cloning her cellphone which leads to them being able to hear and see everything that Angelique is doing. Turns out she has been heavily involved in the dealing of Snakebite and faces 8-10 years in Blackgate Prison. Ryan who previously had did time in prison for Angelique is left with no choice from Sophie but to rat out her friend which leads to the two's relationship crumbling. The other big talking point is to end the episode as Ocean and Alice continue to get their memories back and piece them all together. Alice rings Safiyah to confess that she has killed Ocean which she appears to have done but then Ocean walks into shot revealing that he's actually alive. What a bizarre ending to an episode that felt good in some places but dull in others. All in all it's probably my least favorite episode this season which is a shame because Batwoman has seen a massive improvement thus far. The show now goes on a hiatus and will return with new episodes on March 14th.
