Wonder Woman 1984 review
Back in 2016 Gal Gadots Wonder Woman was revealed to the world in Batman V Superman Dawn Of Justice. Since then she's appeared countless other times but this time around she gets her very own sequel. In a follow up to 2017's Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman 1984 continues years on from where the first movie ended. Now working in Washington DC we see Diana living an almost normal life besides a couple of criminal incidents here and there. She's almost become a myth of sorts within the area with the police and news reporters failing to know exactly who or what is helping them deal with crimes. As all of this is looking fine for 'Wonder Woman' the same can not be said for Diana Prince who lives alone, goes out for dinner alone and for the first 50 minutes or so of this movie is portrayed as sort of a loner. It's surreal to watch given what we know about her and the character but I did enjoy this aspect a lot.
Joining the cast this time around are Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig as the big bad's (villains) of the movie. First off Pedro Pascal is almost too good as Maxwell Lord a man who is portrayed as a con man at first but as the movie goes on his methods and reasons for doing what he is doing get more and more intense and woefully aberrant for all those around him. Pedro Pascal steals the show here on multiple occasions and alongside Kirsten Wiig is easily the most captivating parts of the overall experience. Speaking of Kristen Wiig she plays Dr Barbara Minerva a shy nerdy introvert who we first meet along with Diana. Their interaction is genuinely fun to watch and as the movie goes on and Barbara begins her transformation into the villainous Cheetah their relationship soon begins to tear apart.
Wonder Woman 1984 is a captivating, exciting and world traveled superhero epic. There is plenty to look at here with locations like Washington DC, Egypt and inside the White House itself. Performance wise it's really good too with Pedro Pascal and Kirsten Wiig practically outdoing all expectations. Gal Gadot is fantastic once again as Wonder Woman, she's empowering, strong and full of hope. All of the things and more that Wonder Woman represents. I don't want to delve into much from the story but it's full of surprises along the way and includes at least 2-3 heart pounding and emotional moments. When all is said and done Wonder Woman 1984 is a joy to watch. With the rancid year that 2020 has been this is exactly the movie we never knew we needed. It's definitely worth your time and shows once again that DC has plenty of heart and light to offer.
