Supergirl 5x18 : The Missing Link review

Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.

Supergirl's penultimate episode of season 5 is one of anguish, emancipation and war. Beginning with Lex and Brainy we learn that Lex is now closer than ever to getting his invitation onto the Leviathan ship. Brainy doesn't seem so sure of everything that's been happening even though he still has been helping Lex. A war is brewing says Lex between Leviathan and the Supers and given that Brainy had previously said that Leviathan is the world's greatest threat it seems right to only stop them. We see Kara and Alex meet a man named Pete Andrews. A friend of Kelly's who earlier in the season had been taken over by J'onn's brother. They go to see him as they try to figure out not only the location of Leviathan but what the symbols mean in various old pictures of catastrophic events. What they don't know is that while they're meeting Pete, Gemma Cooper lets Rama Khan free of his chains and tells him to not fail her this time. The earthquake manipulating god is back and he has revenge on his mind. At the very beginning of the episode in a flashback to last week as The Martians fought the Sun Eater we see various inmates who Lena had helped earlier in the season. She had helped them deal with the emotions / rage thanks to her Q wave experiments. Well as the Sun Eater wrecked havoc in National City this caused all of Lena's good intentions to be for nothing as it somehow affects one inmate which in turns leads to almost the entire prison being overrun again with rage. This leads to Lena and Lex working together as they try to find a way to mend everyone but more on this a bit later.

We see J'onn and Miss Martian again looking closer than ever before in the tower. Nia is sleeping in the same room and her dream leads to the location of Rama Khan's potential earthquake spot. But that's not all that was in her dream as she too saw Brainy his face it's original green color. She sees him sitting at a table laughing looking at cards which Rama Khan is pictured on, what could this mean?? it will have to wait for now however as Nia tells everyone that Rama Khan is back and he's likely going to the location Nia saw. Supergirl, Dreamer and The Martians all go to the location and sure enough Rama Khan is there waiting for them. He bangs his staff into the ground and begins an earthquake which The Martians deal with as Dreamer and Supergirl deal with the god. Supergirl soon clicks that his staff is what gives Rama Khan his incredible strength and as Dreamer gets it off of him the DEO and Brainy soon arrive to collect it and Rama Khan himself as they're taken back to the main DEO site. There Brainy is adamant that Supergirl and Dreamer have no place in the room as he questions Rama Khan as if they find out that Brainy is working with Lex it will surely cause all kinds of problems. They're eventually allowed to watch on from behind the glass as Brainy and Rama Khan talk in a different language. The name Luthor manages to slip out however as Nia cops onto it. Of course this all turns out to be a trap as while Brainy is talking to him Rama Khan's staff begins to move and jolt about almost as if it was scanning for something. It's a trap yells out Brainy as Rama Khan actually ends up destroying the entire DEO building reducing it to a pile of rubble thanks to Kryptonite being there to stop Supergirl in her tracks. Outside the rubble Brainy gets shunned out by Nia as he now takes the full blame for the building's demise.
The episode draws to a close as Lena and Lex struggle to contain the inmates inside the prison. Lena once more attempts to use her Q waves to try and 'fix' everyone but it's to no avail. In fact it never did truly work in the first place. It was all false hope which Lex again had some part in. War, pain, suffering and various other emotions are all a part of life whether Lena likes it or not says Lex whom offered her everything to get her experiments right but she failed..again. Lex says his way is the only way and that he will be the savior of the planet. Back at the Tower and as the DEO is now dust and rubble just how will Brainy even operate?? well it's not entirely show here although it is implied that it is something he is going to have to deal with for a long time to come. The episode ends as Lex meets with Brainy again and says that he planned for Brainy's actions all along. The DEO being destroyed is just a tax write off and now Lex is mere inches away from getting his long awaited / overdue invitation to the Leviathan ship. One final thing happens before the episode ends and that is Lena who shows up at Supergirl's door. Genuinely remorseful she asks Kara to let her help stop Lex and Leviathan. With tears in her eyes she asks that she can redeem herself to which Kara replies with sit down as the two are now seemingly going to work together in next week's finale. There was more going on in this episode too like William and Kelly digging further into Obsidian to find that Eve Tessmacher used to work there all the way to J'onn and Miss Martian possibly starting a relationship. This episode was a good set up to next week's finale and while it did feel a bit rushed I guess it really can't be helped given how everything has halted due to the ongoing pandemic. Until next week then Kara!
