Legends Of Tomorrow 5x13 : The One Where We're Trapped on TV review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Legends Of Tomorrow's penultimate episode of season 5 is not only one of the most entertaining and truly wild episodes this season but this show has ever produced in my opinion. It begins in a dystopian world which is now fully run and controlled by the Fates who have total access over the Lume of Faith. We see a returning Mona who along with many others are tasked with rewriting history in a department called the Historical Sanitation Department. Mona is among many others being put to work by the Fates who if anyone steps out of line have no trouble cutting their threads to kill them. Atropos even showcases this as one worker questions the tactics and truth to the entire situation. She kills him right in front of everyone including Mona who soon packs up her stuff and heads home. The outside world is a grey place filled with little to no real joy. While walking home with other workers Mona sees a man standing protesting that this world is all wrong. This guy turns out to be Gary who senses that something is up. He looks all worn out and tired but it's not something that will stop him from throwing out his opinion. As Mona gets back home and tucks into her dinner which is a bowl full of something called mush which is basically the entire world's only food source. It's like wet cement poured into a bowl in various different colors. With her mush in hand Mona switches on the TV and gets greeted by her favorite show. Something called Ultimate Buds which is a parody of the show Friends. It stars Zari, Nate and Behrad who is alive and well again. While Nate and Zari argue the totem that Behrad had been using begins to shine brightly on it's stand. Nate touches it and low and be hold he releases the other Zari that is housed inside of it. Mona who is still watching gets shocked by this as the ghost of this Zari goes into the body of the other Zari. She immediately changes into the old Zari as from this point on she tries to convince everyone that what they're doing is real and that they're basically living inside a TV show. This follows on to the next TV series where Constantine and Astra are. It's a parody of Downtown Abbey named High Castle Abbey.
In High Castle Abbey John Constantine is the butler to Astra and her mom who is now alive and well. They're basically a well to do family who just so happen to be awaiting the arrival of the man Astra is supposed to marry. This leads to Zari, Nate and Behrad entering the fray as Astra who doesn't want to marry takes a liking to Behrad who calls her a Diva. In the kitchen of the house Constantine who has left his magic life behind gets converted back into that life by Zari who tells him what she told everyone else earlier. She is now intent on finding Sara and Ava and with Constantine's help she and everyone else including Astra all get whisked away to deep space. The U.S.S. Faterider rolls into view as Sara and Ava are a part of a show called Star Trip which is a parody of Star Trek. Sara who dons the a slow and somewhat minted accent gives us an intro as both her and Ava do battle with various aliens throughout the galaxy. What follows is an exchange of hilarious back and forth wit as Zari and co who are in full on alien makeup and everything attempt to convince Sara and Ava about the entire situation. Back in the world outside of TV Mona and Gary who agree to try and fix the situation of noticing various shifts and nods within the Legends show go to the main place where the shows are made. Made by Clotho Productions we learn that Charlie set this entire idea up as an alternative to her sisters killing all of the Legends. Gary and Mona learn of an algorithm that Charlie produced that is running and producing entire scripts of these shows in real time. They get to work just as Charlie enters the room.
The episode draws to a close with our final TV show parody and it's a return to Mr Parker's Cul-De-Sac from earlier in the season. A rip on Mr Rogers all the Legends arrive as community workers. Sara who is a police officer kicks Mr Parker out of the house as Mona and Gary begin to re-write the entire script putting in the idea that the Legends remember everything from their past. In the show they all eventually remember with Nate and the old Zari reuniting while others remember what happened just before everything went south. Mr Parker soon returns to the house and with Charlie now in the script writing seat all Legends get banished back to their shows but not before a sing song or two. It's at this point where I realized that this episode is totally off the rails but oh so enjoyable. With everyone back in their respective shows Constantine actually enacts a selfless act and says that he will stay with Astra in this reality as a way to repay what he did to her many years ago. He's willing to stay there for an eternity he says but her mom has other ideas. She wants Astra to go to London and live her life. As this is happening Sara and Ava are back aboard the U.S.S. Faterider and end up getting attacked by a gloriously haired Mick who is intent on revenge. It turns out that Ava and Sara always win in this show so this time they're going to lose. Mick whose hair really is something you have to see blows up the Faterider forcing Charlie to cancel the show as the final thing shown is Sara and Ava sharing a kiss as fire engulfs the ship behind them. With everyone out in the real world almost there is some remaining and that is Zari, Nate and Behrad who stop their show in it's tracks and protest an entire rebellion against the Fates. Soon enough everyone is out in the open as Zari gets split into two different bodies. One is reunited with Behrad while the other quickly embraces with Nate. The episode ends with the Legends all now free but now that Charlie can longer keep them safe the Fate's are sure to try and end them all in next weeks season finale. And that was the episode. It may have sounded like my take on this episode was a bit all over the place but truthfully my words do not do this episode any justice what so ever. It's funny, fast paced and so wildly bizarre and fantastical that even if you're not a fan of this show you're sure to get some enjoyment out of it. This is fun personified and Legends Of Tomorrow at it's absolute best.
