Batwoman 1x18 : If You Believe In Me, I'll Believe In You review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Batwoman returns once again with an episode that felt all over the place at times. The episode begins with some criminals using humans and selling them for their organs. Batwoman shows up and rescues them and that's pretty much it really. As simple as a setup as you can get. Skip to Wayne Enterprises where we see Mary waiting for Kate and Luke in the main office. She has been drinking and offers them some Champagne. Mary thinks she is fully in Team Batwoman but she's soon hit hard by reality as Kate stands her ground and tells her that it's far too dangerous for her to get involved. Julia then enters the room which urks Mary more so even though Kate mentions how Julia is trained in this field. The main focus of this episode however is the journal of Lucius Fox that literally everyone in Gotham is after it seems, it of course is in possession of one Tommy Elliot or is it?? well after Kate goes to pay him a visit in Arkham Asylum it turns out he gave the journal to the head boss of a club called The Lookout which Elliott just so happens to own. We hear him over the phone talking to the boss of the club who of course is a crime boss in Gotham known for money laundering. We see him go and get the journal which is located behind a safe in the top room of the club. At the batcave Luke and Kate are listening in intently and yes it's clubbing time!
Back at Arkham Asylum and after Kate had earlier been to pay him a visit Tommy Elliot is greeted by Alice in his holding room. Inside she too now wants the journal as it has the secrets to killing Batman. Tommy Elliot then blurts out that Bruce Wayne is Batman as all of this 'crazy' behavior he has been showing as predictably enough just been a ruse. Alice wants the journal like I said and she will help Tommy Elliot along with the help of Mouse. But first his face has got to go and this leads to the birth of the villainous Hush! he's not called that by name but with bandages wrapped tightly around his face and a jacket hanging on a coat rack it's only a matter of time before we see Hush in action. More on Kate now and she along with Julia arrive at The Lookout club where Kate is greeted by none other than an old flame in Regan. She fixes up Kate a drink and says that she made a mistake by up and leaving the way she did. Kate says that she was an idiot and should have made more time for her but deep down we as the audience know that was never going to happen. With Julia further in the club looking for the journal Kate soon suits up but ends up getting caught by the club's owner who begins to auction her off gadget by gadget, body piece by body piece in a concept that was truthfully entertaining.
The episode draws to a close back at Wayne Enterprises where Mary demands that Luke let her go to the club and save Batwoman after she got seized. Luke agrees but it's against his better judgement. He doesn't want Mary to be added to the list of people he has to look out for constantly. He's lost his dad he doesn't want to lose any else. At the club Mary gets into the auction site after getting it's location from the cousin of the mob boss owner. Inside the room various criminals are placing money on Batwoman with millions of dollars in the room. Mary offers 10 million dollars for Batwoman but only has 2.5 million in a suitcase with her. She gets denied but the money turns out to be only a ruse as when placed on a table it explodes knocking back everyone in the room. Mary cuts Batwoman loose as Julia too turns up but not after we find out more about her. It turns out that she went rogue from her previous organization 6 months ago and has been M.I.A. since. As for the journal well it turns out Alice has something else up her sleeve in the form of a bird whom she lets free from her cage. It's Magpie and she enters the room where the journal is being kept Mission Impossible style lowering herself into the room on a wire. She actually ends up getting the journal as Batwoman soon meets up with her on the roof of the building. Magpie throws the book off the roof but Batwoman retrieves it. With things now looking up for Batwoman and in particular Luke Kate ends up going home with Regan and sleeps with her. Upon waking up the following morning she is greeted by an empty bed and no Regan. In fact it turns out that Regan has taken the journal from Kate's bag and much to Luke's dismay and Julia's suspicions Kate apologizes. We actually do see Regan again however and it turns out that she is the sister of Magpie and that is who she gives the journal too as she in turn gives it to Alice in return for her being let loose and to her own designs. With the journal now in her possession Alice looks set to finally beat Batwoman or does she?? as upon reading the journal Mouse blurts out that Lucius Fox wrote the entire journal in some sort of code. He shows it to Alice who is shocked and quite angry at the situation. Who can decipher it then?? Luke perhaps?? all in all this episode was fine. It did nothing really wrong but it did feel a bit jumbled at times. Mary attempting to get into Team Batwoman was a delight to watch. Her intentions are good but Luke's refusal to let her in seems acceptable. As for Kate she really did let her guard down in this episode especially towards the end. Was fun to see Regan back even if her being Magpie's sister was a lackluster reveal. Lucius's journal however that is an entirely different beast. Everyone in Gotham is after it. You got Team Batwoman, The Crows, Alice and Mouse..and now Hush! where could this end up?? it feels like this story has come from left field as even though it's interesting there's just a lot to take in. Not a bad episode just nothing amazing.
