Legends Of Tomorrow 5x8 : Zari, Not Zari review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Legends Of Tomorrow has returned from it's extended hiatus given the situation the world currently finds itself in. With everything that has been going on having our favorite band of misfits back if even for a short period (who knows how long before another hiatus). The episode begins in London 1977. Taking place three days after Charlie originally joined the Legends in season 4 we see a woman walking into the club where Charlie and her band used to play. This woman turns out to be Atropos one of the Greek weavers and sister of Charlie. She ends up killing one of Charlie's former band mates as the episode then cuts to aboard the waverider where we see Zari sleeping. But she isn't sleeping alone. In fact she's in bed with Nate but it they didn't sleep together in fact Zari is in the bed because she sleepwalked into his room and right into his bed. She awakes in a panic and rushes out of the room leaving Nate and Behrad to take it all in. On the bridge Charlie and Constantine argue about going after the next part of the Lume of Faith. Sara suggests putting everything on hold for the time being but Constantine takes the jump ship and goes it alone as he locates the next part of the Lume. It's in British Columbia, Vancouver where he ends up making landfall. Sara and Charlie soon follow him as they learn that the show Supernatural is filming in the surrounding area. Sara funnily mentions how Sam Winchester is her hall pass as the entire scenario and mentions just fly over Charlie's head.
Speaking of Charlie upon arrival she begins to hear voices of her sisters much like earlier on in the season. Back in hell we meet Charlie's other sister who turns out to be the woman who has been helping Astra with Constantine. She has access to Constantine's whereabouts and tells Atropos that someone named Charlie has been travelling through time with Constantine looking for the Lume pieces. Atropos takes it upon herself to go and stop her sister and stop her in her tracks she does and pretty soon after she too arrives in British Columbia and greets the gang who are on the hunt for the next piece of the Lume. Constantine uses his magic to fight of the Greek god but ends up getting wounded pretty bad. Sara and Charlie get away however and it's towards the end when things really come into focus. More on Zari now and while aboard the waverider she again begins to get visions of her past self. Especially so when she gets offered to play a video game with Behrad. She smashes him easily in the game much to both her and his dismay. When did Zari become this good at video games then?? well things only further begin to freak her out as Behrad's totem reacts to her hand movements and Zari shoots wind out of her hands. Shocked by the situation Behrad and Nate try to help Zari with everything that's been going on as she slowly begins to think she is losing her mind. Behrad suggests that Zari take a trip inside his totem which takes a bit of convincing but Zari does eventually agree. She has to take some sort of drug and when she does she instantly becomes high as she is transported into the totem world. Inside we meet the Zari of old as both she and the new Zari come face to face. It turns out that when the Legends tampered with time at Nate and his dad's theme park at the end of last season instead of being completely banished from existence the old Zari was placed into the totem world where she lives with other totem bearers. She asks the new Zari about her brother and her family and everything else in between. This was a surreal scene to be honest but what follows is one of the more heart wrenching parts of this season so far..but more on that just a bit later.
The episode draws to a close back in British Columbia as Constantine had earlier been left for dead it turns out that Atropos has been pretending to be him as Sara and Charlie get closer and closer to the Lume's location which just so happens to be inside of a giant tree hole. Charlie gets the Lume piece but ends up getting impaled by her sister and we learn that Charlie has become mortal during her time away from being one of the Greek Weavers of legend. Sara gets the same fate that Charlie's old band member got at the beginning of the episode which is that Atropos turns completely white before unleashing a burst of white flame into her target. Atropos takes the Lume piece but the waverider arrives to make the rescue..or does it?? this only ends up giving the location of the second Lume piece away to Atropos who boards the waverider to take the piece for herself. Behrad stands in her way and refuses to just let her take the Lume piece. It comes at the cost of his life as Atropos kills him without any mercy. Behrad's body falling to the waverider ground as Atropos goes to leave with the Lume piece. Sara who had survived the previous attack chases after her and the two fight by the escape door of the waverider. In short they both end up fighting for their lives as the door opens and both are caught in it's trajectory. Charlie soon shows up to save Sara and in the process cuts off Atropos's hand in turn saving the Lume pieces for the Legends and sending her sister to her apparent death. Zari then wakes up from her totem state but only to find the body of her brother on the ground. Instantly breaking down after not mere moments earlier becoming one with herself more than ever she is greeted by her own brother's death. As the legends scatter from view Zari marches to Constantine who is in the medical bay healing up his wounds. Zari says from now on wherever he goes she will follow him until they're able to get the last Lume piece and bring back her brother. Constantine looks on worried as the episode ends. There was a lot more going on in this episode like Mick's parenting through time but it failed in comparison to the major plot going on throughout. This episode was fantastic and again kept the momentum of this season going. It's beautifully woven together at times (no pun intended) and is just a joy to watch. It's great to have this show back again and I once more look forward to next week.
