Supergirl 5x16 : Alex in Wonderland review

Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have Alex Danvers as Supergirl and not Kara?? well look no more as this episode offers Alex a chance to don the suit and become truly super. The episode starts at Kara's place where her and J'onn are talking about Jeremiah Danver's passing which we learned about in the last episode. They go to see Alex as they get set to attend the funeral in Midvale. Alex says she is not attending as her issues with her dad truly come to the forefront in a way that makes Alex come off as this ungrateful person. She even tells Kelly to get out of her sight which was a bit shocking really. Soon after being alone for some time Alex picks up the VR lenses that Kelly left behind. Once she puts them on she is thrown into a world where she is Supergirl. Complete with black outfit and black hair she takes off and fly's high into the sky of National City as she becomes National City's #1 hero. Her first stop is at a mall like area where she meets someone also from the real world. A man is playing a guitar which sounds like the Supergirl theme song done in a really unique way. Alex confronts him and mentions Virtual Reality. He responds after Alex fly's away by saying what is Virtual Reality?? the woman she had earlier met is seen again soon at a bar where Alex meets her and the two share a drink for a brief moment before Alex gets a call from J'onn who is at the DEO which gives serious seasons 1-4 flashbacks.

Alex rushes to the DEO where she learns of an attack from none other than Hank Henshaw. Which again gives serious season 1-2 flashbacks. He tells everyone that he not only has a missile which he intends to use to destroy the DEO so that he can rebuild it. He also has another trick up his sleeve and that is a kidnapped Kara. Alex soon rushes to his location and takes him out in a scene that is extremely corny. In fact this episode is real corny at times. Everyone's acting in this VR session is weird and totally out there that in all honesty it was distracting. Hank Henshaw's yelling at Alex was so odd and not in character at all. Brainy was acting odd also. It all seems like a Saturday morning cartoon as it gives off silly and goofy vibes. We do finally find out something regarding Leviathan and their plan however as it turns out that when people are inside the VR simulation for a certain period of time the lenses they are using begin to turn red and which in turn kills them and traps them in the simulation seemingly forever.
The episode draws to a close as Alex leaves the simulation or so it seems but she is actually still inside of it. She has short hair now and once again gets a call from J'onn who tells her that the mind bending villain PSY is on the loose which is why everyone is acting strangely. On the outside Kelly finds Alex deep in the simulation in her apartment and immediately puts the issue to Andrea who tells her that the error in last week's episode still hasn't been fixed because of money / various other issues. Kelly comes up with a way to snap Alex out of the simulation as she uses a young version of Alex who we saw before in flashback episodes as a way to coax Alex back into the real world. She succeeds in doing this as Alex says ''End simulation'' as she returns to the real world. One of two final things we see is firstly William learns of a location where people who've used the VR lenses are being kept after use. He enters the building and as expected Leviathan hides the true vision of the room. He does find a patient ID bracelet as things get more interesting. Second and finally we see Alex actually attend her father's funeral alongside Kelly. She sits next to Kara as their mom delivers her eulogy to all attendees and that's how the episode ends. This was an interesting episode to say the least. On one side I enjoyed it on the other it felt overly silly and goofy especially with some performances just being totally wack. As a whole I did enjoy this. Seeing Alex suit up as Supergirl was a nice change of pace if I'm being completely honest and overall it wasn't all bad.
