Supergirl 5x14 : The Bodyguard review

Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.

Supergirl returns from it's week off with an interesting episode. Beginning in an odd Norse type landscape we see a warrior slay a dragon while on horseback. This soon fizzles out as it's seen to be VR based thanks to Obsidian North's new Platinum lenses. We see Kara, Nia and Alex on the outside observing people who are using the lenses which are to launch in National City in less than 24 hours. Alex mentions how uncomfortable she feels without a weapon on her after leaving the DEO. She feels a little lost without her sidearm as it's the first time in 8 years she's been without one in the outside world. William soon arrives with coffee for everyone in an awkward moment for Kara after what happened between those two previously. The entire situation soon escalates however as inside the Obsidian building a surge of purple energy shifts through the elevator that Andrea Rojas just so happens to be inside of. Supergirl comes to her rescue and saves her from this purple energy surge. On the ground Andrea learns of a threat on her life as the launch of Obsidian's new Premium lenses draws near.

Back at the DEO we see Brainy working on Toy Man's code again as he has found a way to inject it into Leviathan but they will need to find their base of operations if Lex is to succeed. This leads to Lex getting closer and closer to Leviathan as he again meets Gemma Cooper who as we the audience know is a member of the mysterious group. With the news of the threat on Andrea's life becoming public news Lex tasks Supergirl with becoming Andrea's bodyguard in the lead up to the launch. While Supergirl is off playing bodyguard Alex and J'onn lead an investigation to find out the identity of just who or what was responsible for the purple energy source earlier in the episode. It turns out to be not an Alien like first thought but in fact a former employee of Obsidian's widowed wife who wants revenge on the company for creating the VR tech which lead to her husband becoming truly obsessed with. Wearing gauntlets that able her to consume the power of those she touches she manages to drain J'onn for a bit as she sets an old barn on fire. Supergirl rushes off to out the flames as she leaves Andrea at the DEO with Brainy. Andrea slips out of her cell thanks to her shadow powers which we know is from Leviathan. Brainy is confused by this and consults the other versions of himself which really doesn't go anywhere at least for now.
The episode draws to a close back at Cat.Co and with Supergirl preoccupied now with the threat on Andrea's life she attempts to fight back against the woman who promises that she will kill everybody inside of the building if she isn't taken seriously. Supergirl manages to talk her out of it predictable as she is placed into custody. To be honest this was pretty underwhelming if I do say so. That's the episode as a whole in a nutshell. Underwhelming. It's not bad or anything just felt flat. Andrea makes her escape from Cat.Co thanks to her shadow power so who knows where we'll see her next. As for Leviathan they get much closer with Lex or at least Gemma Cooper does as Lex continues to wiggle his way closer and closer to their main base in exchange for helping her. As for Kara she puts aside her doubts and asks William out properly this time and it looks like that'll be a big focus going forward. If I didn't say much about this episode then I'm sorry but honestly this really felt like filler in my opinion. After the last episode which was the best this season had to offer I really hoped we'd see a spike in quality as for the most part season 5 has really done nothing to get me truly excited bar one of two things. Even Lena's human trials for her experiments did little to entice me which was a shame. It's good to have Supergirl back again but maybe a much better episode next time out eh Kara??
