The Lighthouse review
Robert Eggers's second movie as director pits Robert Pattinson against Willem Defoe and boy is it a crazy, horrific yet reflective experience. The movie begins with our 2 main characters arriving on an island that right off the bat something just doesn't feel right about. Both men are here to tend to the Lighthouse and various other duties. But as time goes on and what was a supposed 4 week stay for Pattinson's character becomes much, much longer both men fight for their sanity as with each passing day things get more and more bizarre. Willem Defoe and Robert Pattinson are absolutely sublime here with the two of them basically being on screen for almost every moment of it's run time. It's almost like watching a theater play come to life on the big screen in a two man show type of way as the two leads bounce off one another leaving a connection that is just amazing to watch it really is top notch stuff.
From the get go The Lighthouse will grab you and refuse to let go. It's score and overall atmosphere is second to none. It is in Black & White rather than the usual color style and that too only adds to the aesthetic of it all. Pattinson is a true stand out however in really what is a physically demanding role. He's collecting wheelbarrows of coal. swabbing the deck and catching lobsters. Willem Defoe delivers too no doubt with a strong sailor tone filled to the brim with old tales of the sea and mentions of Neptune and Poseidon. He absolutely nails the role and is a total contrast to that of Pattinson's timid at first but as the movie goes on strange and wild personality.
The Lighthouse is definitely not going to be for everyone. It's incredibly dark at times and filled to the brim with references of life, death and the sea. It's tone, dialogue and pace is unrelenting too with some scenes that are astounding to watch with some of the finest acting you'll ever see. We're only 1 month and a few days into 2020 but already The Lighthouse is a strong contender for the best movie this year. I'd even go as far as to say that it will be unlike anything you'll see all year long. A masterclass in film making.
