The Flash 6x12 : A Girl Named Sue review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Since coming back after Crisis The Flash has felt like a different show in some aspects. The silly jokes have gone, the narrative is getting stronger and overall it's felt much more grounded. Well that continues here with another really solid episode. It begins inside of Iris and Barry's apartment where we see the two sitting down. Across the room inside of the mirror we see Iris where last week she was banging on the same exact mirror screaming at Barry. This week we actually see the other side of the mirror where Iris is and she is not alone. She is with Eva McCulloch who upon the night of the Particle Accelerator was blown into this mirror dimension thanks to it's force and Dark Matter. Inside this mirror dimension lies an entire Central City that is completely baron with nobody around to talk to or even see. This has lead to 6 years or so of isolation for Eva McCulloch which has slowly but surely driven her mad. Iris assures her that they will get out and return to the normal world but it's a tall order. Previously we saw Ralph working on a case of a missing girl. After taking on the case of Sue Dearbon after her parents had contacted him Ralph has been working tirelessly on her whereabouts in his spare time. Almost to the point of becoming totally obsessed he seems to have cracked the case when he finally finds this Sue Dearbon in an apartment which just so happens to blown up the moment he opens the door. Both parties escape safely and this girl is Sue Dearbon. Right off the bat she is an extremely likable character with some dark lying undertones present also. Her and Ralph seem to hit it off a lot as her story gets told in her own perspective. She has an ex that is a weapons dealer among many other things. He has been targeting her and everyone she is close to which is why she has been in hiding. Ring her parents? he'll have them killed. Tell the cops? the same. So this leads to the two working together to bring her ex down and restore her name.
Iris on the outside world is strangely enough looking for the mirror gun from last season. Barry is extremely against her obtaining it and even contacts Joe about the situation. Something seems off about Iris and Barry can tell as his entire demeanor sorta shifts and changes. He does go see Joe and Iris does end up getting the gun towards the end of the episode but for what purpose? no clue yet but I'm sure we'll find out soon. Back inside the mirror dimension and Iris recalls the team's previous encounter with Sam Scutter the Mirror Master himself. Way back in season 3 he trapped Barry in a mirror and the only way he was able to escape was thanks to Killer Frost's cold powers which lowered the mirror's heat which lead to it shattering into tiny pieces. Iris asks Eva does she have any liquid nitrogen in her lab to which she does. So they get to work on the mirror and lay on the frost as it looks set to be working at the beginning it soon quickly spirals into nothingness as the mirror shatters and breaks before both them. With them now stuck for good it seems good luck again swings their way as while Eva panics and begins to lose control the mirror pieces on the floor begin to move before one flies into her hand. This will be the key to getting out back into the real world and stopping this imposter Iris from doing whatever she has planned to do. More on Ralph and Sue and as the two work almost too well together things hit a small bump when they invade a building to steal a ledger that contains all kinds of information vital to Sue in stopping her ex... or does it??
The episode draws to a close at this vault where Sue not surprisingly betrays Ralph as there was no ledger and her ex wasn't really a threat. This was all a ruse to get a diamond that seems to have various coding on it. This little charade is cut short when Ultraviolet shows up and her and Sue battle it out as Ralph watches on after escaping from his cell and getting hit by UV waves. Sue gets away with the diamond in the following moments as The Flash arrives to stop the situation from escalating further. The episode ends back inside of the mirror dimension where Iris looks on as we see Barry looking back at her. They can't see one another but Barry's look tells a thousand words as he knows something is up deep down it's just a matter of Iris and Eva somehow escaping or Barry outing this imposter Iris and stopping her using the mirror gun. Before the episode truly ends we do see Sue one last time examining this strange diamond that looks like it's going to be a big part of the narrative at least when it comes to Sue going forward. I really did enjoy this episode. It felt grounded like I mentioned at the beginning with little to no use of powers from anyone minus the last couple of minutes. Iris being stuck in this mirror dimension with Eva who is slowly becoming more erratic is really interesting and overall The Flash has been on an incredibly strong form since it came back post crisis. Long may it continue.
