Sonic The Hedgehog review
Upon it's initial reveal the beloved video game icon Sonic The Hedgehog's design from video game character to movie star did not sit well with fans. His design was way off. Gone was the bright open eyes and red & white shoes. In it's place was a more realistic looking Hedgehog that looked like something that was fan-made and not by a million dollar budget. After some time passed however another trailer dropped for Sonic The Hedgehog and it was spectacular. Gone was the freakish design and in it's place was a far more faithful design of Sonic. So what that in place could the movie actually be any good?? starring James Marsden and Jim Carrey as Dr Robotnick himself Sonic's big screen debut is a fun, emotion filled tale about friendship, fun and getting to know yourself better.
First off there is Jim Carrey and he is perfectly cast as the mad genius that is Dr Robotnick also known as Eggman. He's hilarious, way over the top and a genius true and true. He is easily the standout out here in a role that really was just made for him in my opinion. James Marsden is fine here also his performance isn't anything amazing or anything but he and Sonic when together make a incredibly enjoyable duo to watch. Speaking of Sonic he is beautifully animated with those giant eyes and iconic shoes in tact. All he wants is to not be alone on Earth and after hiding away for years his wish comes true but it's at the cost of others as by revealing himself he puts others in danger as the hunt for his power begins.
At it's core Sonic The Hedgehog is a movie about friendship and the power it houses. It's a wild ride with such an overall fun feeling that will leave you with a giant smile on your face scene after scene. Jim Carrey plays perfectly to everything and everyone around him and all in all this is one of the finest video game to movie adaptations that I've seen in quite some time. I'd even go as far as to say it's in the top 3 of all time. It's a charming, spectacular experience that is made all the more special if you're a fan of the video games themselves. Sonic The Hedgehog is definitely worth checking out.
