Legends Of Tomorrow 5x5 : Mortal Khanbat review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Directed by none other than Caity Lotz this week's episode of Legends Of Tomorrow picks up almost right where last week's ended with an on the verge of death John Constantine. The episode starts with Ray, Charlie and Gary fading in and out view. They're all on the waverider as Constantine gets rushed to the Medical Bay where Gideon confirms that he has Lung Cancer and it's terminal. Constantine thinks none of this at the beginning and even lights up a cigarette almost like he's laughing at the face of death. Moments later he passes out thanks to a sedative provided by Gideon who says that John needs rest for the time being. Charlie is the main star of this episode however as while she is about to leave the waverider she begins to hear voices in her head saying things like ''you can't escape us'' among other things. Totally freaked out by this she bumps into Behrad who we learn she has had a strong relationship with ever since the whole Heyworld incident at the end of season 4. The two even spent a night together in something that totally came out of the blue really. This relationship was the forefront of this episode and honestly I just wish they would've mentioned it earlier in the season. It would've made me care a whole lot more. Charlie was gone for the majority of this season so far and only know we learn about the relationship she and Bahred share?? I'm just nitpicking but it's just poor writing and planning ahead. Moving on though and back at the bridge we learn of the latest Encore's location. Hong Kong 1997 where someone is trying to nestle in on the Triads. In a funny moment Ava who is still Captain filling in for Sara who is still away shows the team her new way of locating Encores but it's completely overshadowed by Nate who rolls into the bridge on an electrical scoots much to everyone's surprise and delight.
So it's off to 1997 Hong Kong and a tea room that is a front for all kinds of Triad goings on. Ava, Charlie and Behrad are all inside of the tea room playing innocent as Nate is on the outside keeping an eye out for the possible Encore. It does end up being Nate who scouts the Encore and it's none other than the Mongol leader Genghis Khan. He arrives on a motor cycle of all things and walks into the tea room carrying a suitcase. Nate sends the message along to Ava whose great plan is to inject the Encore with a sedative which in turn will render them useless and it's a quick grab and go back to the ship. Charlie takes the sedative and tries to inject Genghis Khan herself but it turns out to be Behrad who gets ID'd by Triad members and a giant shootout erupts in the tea room between Triad members, Ava and 3 undercover cops. Charlie is hot on the heels of Khan and ends up getting to him but she ends up doing nothing as he lets her go along with Behrad stating that next time they won't be so lucky. More on Constantine now and back aboard the waverider he is in a pretty bad way health wise but still intends on going home to try and find out just who or what made him be like this. He says it's completely magic based as terminal cancer doesn't just spring on someone so quickly. He's right we the audience know and eventually it's off to his house once again with Ray and Gary coming along for the ride. At his home Constantine attempts a summoning which is successful and he awakens in a dream like scenario with Astra standing in the corner of the room. She tells him that it was her who sped up his demise. Constantine refutes by saying that whoever Astra made a deal with to get this done is all just leading to a trap which Astra says she will keep in mind. Constantine has a proposition for Astra however and it is one of bringing her mom back and giving her the life she deserved before everything went south. Not believing him for once second time continues to tick away as Constantine is thrust back into the real world where death awaits him. He comes up with various plans like Nora getting one of her fairy godmother kids to wish the he would no longer be sick and also getting one of last season's magical creatures to help. It's all no use as the Grim Reaper slowly approaches minute by minute.
The episode draws to a close back in Hong Kong where some recon has to be done on Genghis Khan and his weapon before any real plan to stop him once and for all can be put in place. Charlie goes undercover and impersonates one of Khan's guards who is in charge of securing and aiding his fleet. It turns out the Mongol leader's weapon is a sword full of hell energy much like Bugsy's gun a few weeks back. He kills one of the undercover cops as a way to further instill fear among his enemies as his end goal is revealed. To kill Prince Charles and stop him from ordering peace between Britain and Hong Kong. In a funny twist of events Genghis Khan's fleet isn't anything war related. Instead it's a fleet of scooters. The same scooters that Nate had earlier in the episode. We see Khan and his followers riding through the streets of Hong Kong as they hunt down Prince Charles who is quickly making his escape from them. In a hilarious moment seconds before this Nate discovers the fleet of scooters and shouts KHAAANNNN up at the heavens in a side splitting moment of tribute to Star Trek. In short it turns out to be Charlie who kills Genghis Khan with his own sword of destruction thus banishing him for good this time. She had some help from Behrad though as the two reconnected even if it was for a brief moment. Back aboard the waverider and Charlie takes a moment to explain why she ran away at the beginning of the season and just what is the voices if her head all about. She reveals to everyone that she is one of 3 Greek Weavers. Named Clotho (the spinner) she along with her two sisters are god like begins who assign individual destinies to people at birth. The voices in her head are those of her two sisters who are coming after her after she took and broke apart something called the Lume of Faith an ancient artifact with supreme power. This ties in nicely to how the episode ends as Astra not shockingly really changes Constantine's fate so he doesn't die from lung cancer. Instead he makes a promise with her. He will bring back her mother all he needs is access to the Lume of Faith..things just got a whole lot more interesting. This episode was certainly the weakest in a while. It wasn't as funny as past weeks and didn't really flow that well. It wasn't bad by any means and overall I think Caity Lotz did a fantastic job directing. Legends now takes a week hiatus and will return on March 10th. Until then Legends!
