Legends Of Tomorrow 5x3 : Slay Anything review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Legends Of Tomorrow has been on quite the roll post Crisis so far. Can it continue it's rich vein of form with this week's episode?? the episode begins in 2004 at Iron Heights where we see someone strapped to an electric chair about to executed. The man is asked does he have anything to say before the lever to release the electricity gets pulled. All he says is that he loves his mom who just so happens to be watching from behind the glass. The lever gets flipped and soon the man is killed almost instantly by the electric currents flowing throughout his body. His mom collapses in the room next door as we then see a coroner driving at night. In short he ends up getting killed by someone. A name tag is seen that says Freddy Meyers and back at the Waverider Ava recognizes that name instantly. Deemed the Prom Night Slasher Freddy Meyers killed countless of his high school classmates in 2004 Central City after being bullied and made fun of most notably around prom time 1989. So it's mission time once more for the Legends as Freddy is the latest Encore to return from Hell thanks to Astra. It's all a bit too coincidental however especially when there's a high school reunion happening at the exact school where the murders happen. So it's off to 2004 to the high school to find Freddy and put a stop to everything. After arriving at the school Ava freaks out even more as she notices things from the murder like a weapon used by one of the final girls among other things. The high school also turns out to be Mick's old school and he is greeted by a former love interest / classmate. Sara and Ava end up meeting Tiffany Harper the final girl who of course was the stereotypical 'hot' girl in her class. Sara refers to herself and Ava as losers while they were attending which was a funny cover up.
Back aboard the waverider and after being introduced to time travel and the rest of the legends last week Zari slowly but surely begins to find her feet aboard the ship. She's still not entirely comfortable but it's a work in progress as towards the end of the episode especially she gets a glimpse of her times with the Legends and her being a hacker which only leads to her getting out into the open and arriving in 2004 before helping fend off the encore but more on that a bit later. As the episode goes on Nora returns to the ship from her ongoing Fairy Godmother duties and immediately falls asleep while talking to Ray who had a romantic plan in place. She awakes a bit later and is greeted by a giant headache caused by the wishes of needy children and teens everywhere. She mentions how the strongest need automatically sends her to that location and where does she end up? well of course in the bedroom of a young about to attend prom Freddy Meyers. So Nora is in 1989 and thanks to Ray's mention of attempting to actually reform some of the Encore's a young age she works with Freddy to make the prom night go as swimmingly as possible. Freddy's mom however seems eerily creepy in a sort of Psycho level. She seems very over protective especially when Freddy mentions how he's going to the prom. It's almost like she wants to never let him do anything but he does end up attending the prom after being asked by Tiffany Harper to attend. Back in 2004 however things really aren't going as planned as a masked killer shows up on the school grounds. Complete with butcher knife in hand this was a serious throwback to the Halloween movie which is what I'm sure they were going for here. Ava and Sara attempt to fight off the killer but they are shocked when it turns out the killer has telekinetic powers and uses them to not only lock the doors of the school so nobody can get in or out but also uses them to trap someone in a locker before crushing them to death.
The episode ends with the big reveal that it was Freddy Meyer's mom Cathy Meyers under the mask all along as she in her own words did all of this for Freddy as a way to protect him. Thanks to Nora, Ray and Nate Freddy has a normal prom night with Tiffany. Well pretty normal considering how most proms usually end up going. Just as they are about to leave Freddy, Tiffany and Zari who thought their limo was a shared car all get trapped inside with the killer who swings the butcher knife wildly left and right not caring who it hits. This is happening in 1989 while back in 2004 Ava and Sara become the final girls themselves as they face off against Cathy Meyers and end up defeating her which also ends the life of the Encore in the past. This was actually a bit confusing to wrap my head around at first but once I got what was happening then it all made sense. Cathy Meyers was an overprotective mother who upon her son's execution in 2004 via electric chair got a heart attack and died in the room next to his. She was sent back to the land of the living by Astra where she exacted her revenge upon those who did Freddy wrong both past and present time periods. Time travel is confusing eh? well the episode ends with Constantine who I haven't even mentioned all episode. That's because he's barely featured except for a scene where he and Gary go back to an old house of his. Inside they see bodies asleep on the floor, stairs etc. Another Constantine enters the room and it's Charlie in disguise. John tells her to clean up the mess and get the hell out. That's pretty much it until the end where Charlie sees Constantine drinking alone in the kitchen area. He speaks of redemption and all the mistakes he's made. He also mentions and points to a door which seals Astra's mom's soul inside. Sealed away he tells Charlie that upon entering he don't think things will ever be the same upon exit which only spurs Charlie on further to convince Constantine to go inside to which he does. He breaks the seal and is wished good luck by Charlie as the episode cuts to black. There was more going on in this episode too like Mick's reunion with his old flame, Nate still trying to get through to Zari and some truly hilarious moments throughout. This is Legends Of Tomorrow at it's almost best. It still isn't perfect but the difference between this season so far and last season so far is almost night and day. Keep this up and Legends will in no time return to it's high quality of season 3 which still is my favorite all time season of this show. The horror / slashes aspect was done really well incorporating plenty of different movie vibes. The comedy was well done and overall this episode was just a fun time to be had. Roll on next week.
