Batwoman 1x13 : Drink Me review

Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.

This weeks episode of Batwoman begins with the introduction of the villain of the week. It's none other than a Vampire. An extremely seductive Vampire who drains the blood completely from her victims. Her victims are mainly those who occupy grimy bars in the seedy side of Gotham. With her actions getting more and more traction Kate gets word of the ongoings and deems herself the Vampire slayer by always saying she's wanted to slay a Vampire. Speaking of Kate after what happened last week with her having chosen Beth over Alice only for the before mentioned to end up getting killed anyway really looks like it's taken it's toll on Kate. She blames herself for what happened but in reality she made the right call it was just destined to not be. Back to the Vampire and she gets named Nocturna by Luke who aids Batwoman in putting her down and out. Upon first meeting Batwoman ends up getting bit on the lip by Nocturna which knocks Batwoman out. She awakens to see that she is bound much like Nocturnas previous victims. Luke spikes Kate with an adrenaline shot as the Crows rush into the building. Sophie is ahead of the other members and cuts Batwoman loose stating that this is the last time she is going to help her. No other mentions of them being in contact will ever be mentioned or thought about..yeah we'll see about that.

The next day we see Kate at Mary's clinic where she mentions and then comes up with a story of her partying too hard the night to explain her symptoms to Mary which she says are flu-like symptoms. Upon further examination Mary finds ketamine in Kate's bloodstream which is typically found in animal tranquilizers. Kate brushes it off and leaves leaving Mary confused. A plan is eventually put into place to lure Nocturna to Batwoman. The opening of Kate's club gets it's opening night. Named the The Hold Up Kate, Luke and even Mary are using this as a way to lure the Vampire to the location given how she's been taking and killing people who frequently occupy clubs. Sophie who after helping Batwoman earlier has her position as the second in command of the Crows put to the test as Jacob Kane gets released from prison. He questions Sophie about her true intentions and which side she really is before handing her an assignment of going to Kate's grand opening undercover to find out about Nocturna as Jacob as deemed it top priority to catch her before Batwoman can thus instilling the trust of the people back into the Crows. Upon her arrival at the club Sophie gets talking to a mysterious woman who Kate thinks is Nocturna. Her jealous side really comes out to play here as even Luke nods at it. Kate interrupts the Sophie and the woman by offering them both a drink. Kate's outfit is on point here as she's wearing almost like a waitress shirt with a suspender belt. Kate tests to see if the woman is infact Nocturna by cutting herself with a knife exposing her blood. The woman gets dizzy for a second at the sight of the blood which confirms that this isn't the Vampire.
The episode draws to a close with even more problems arising for Kate. As while examining the monitors she spots Alice outside of the club waiting for her to come outside. The two talk for a bit about the events of last week but really it doesn't go anywhere for the time being. Back inside and Luke exams the security cameras some more and spots a woman entering the area not long after Alice left. Her name is Natalia Knight and yes she is Nocturna. She has a weakness. Upon exposure to sunlight / UV light her skin gets severely burned. Soon after this as expected it turns out she has kidnapped Alice and has her bound by church ropes which Kate immediately spots belong to the Gotham Cathedral. We see Nocturna and Alice talk with Alice almost begging for her life. She doesn't say so but it's easy to see really. Alice ends up mentioning someone with the best blood in Gotham. Mary Hamilton. After drinking the antidote to save her life her blood now contains it flowing throughout her system. Nocturna ends up kidnapping Mary which leads to Batwoman heading to the Cathedral where really it all began for Natalia Knight. Her adoptive father worked there and after he died not so long she was left to her own games. In summary using Mary was all a part of Alice's plan as her and Batwoman actually end up working together to stop Nocturna which Batwoman does by using a UV light scarring her face high up by the bell tower. After everything is said and done it turns out Nocturna wasn't even a real Vampire. The teeth she had were implants and her bite contained the animal tranquilizer that I mentioned earlier ketamine. The episode ends with 3 final important points. First is Mary finally figuring out the identity of Batwoman as she pieces all the clues of things like ketamine being in Kate's system and Sophie mentioning how Batwoman was bitten. This alone just blew everything wide open. Second is that Alice learns that her former captive has Mouse kidnapped. And we learn of his full name August Cartwright. Could he be the true big bad this season? the third and most important piece is that of Sophie getting suspended from the Crows by Jacob after he found out about her and Batwoman working together / Sophie letting Batwoman go. We see Sophie turn on the bat-signal and Batwoman arrives atop the building. The two talk where Sophie says how much her job meant to her and now it's practically gone. The episode ends with Sophie and Batwoman (Kate) kissing passionately. They stop for a moment look at one other then begin to kiss again as the passion and feelings for one another never truly went away in reality. Overall this was another good episode of Batwoman. Another week of further improvement. It's not perfect but it's really hitting it's stride. Nocturnas character wasn't amazing but for a villain of the week it was perfectly acceptable. Batwoman now takes a week leave and will return on March 8th! Until then.
