Supergirl 5x10 : The Bottle Episode review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Supergirl returns after it's mid season hiatus and after the events of Crisis On Infinite Earths things will never truly be the same. The episode begins with a DEO advert showcasing the relationship and promise between Lex, Lena and Supergirl to strive to make the world a better place. We then see Kara and Alex walking along as the advert ends with Kara's reaction being that of disgust. Between last week and now J'onn has restored Alex's memory which gets her back on board with Kara and everything else ongoing. Next thing we see is Lena wake up and she suddenly remembers everything. She is greeted by Lex who asks for her to be by his side and work together again. Crisis changed his mindset on everything and he wants to be better. Not believing a thing he says Lena agrees to nothing for now and even has the same speech said by Supergirl to her later. Not one to be played by anyone Lena leaves them both answer less for now. Brainiac-5 and Nia are then seen on a date walking through a park. Brainy has 2 drinks set for them and as he goes to get them he is greeted by another Brainiac-5?? completely freaked out by this things get even weirder back at the DEO as more variations of Brainiac-5 turn up one even being a female. So what's this all about?? well in a nutshell each Brainiac-5 is that of a different universe and as the battle for the multiverse was taking place one of the Brainy's shrunk his entire universe down to a miniature size and bottled it thus the name of the episode. His plan is to open it and release his universe but needs something in the DEO to succeed. If he does let his universe out of the bottle it will completely destroy both his earth and the one remaining.
The Team learn of the point where all Brainiac's entered the earth and it's at a place named Al's bar. Surprisingly enough there is a cameo from the 3 witches who helped resurrect Reign in season 3. A bar fight breaks out between everyone in the bar. Brainy had earlier told Supergirl of how the three dots on his head stop him from becoming truly evil. While in the bar he with the aid of Nia actually takes off the dots and fully embraces his Brainiac side turning green instead of blue in the process. He looks in total control of his powers and manages to even stop the other Brainiac from opening the bottle. Instead both he and the 3 Reign witches all go inside the bottle too as they will still be together while Supergirl and co search for a way to open the bottle in a safe and open place. 2 Brainiac variations remain and ultimately agree to give up their status and bond with the big brain. What's the big brain?? well it's like a giant computer cloud where all intelligent life among Brainiac's is stored and held. Before she leaves the female Brainiac tells our Brainy that if he Supergirl and the others are to stop Leviathan they have to work with Lex Luthor. She did the opposite on her world and paid the price for it. She also says he has to do it alone now which means that he has to break up with Nia and not stop fighting until the world is safe. He agrees and does end up breaking up with Nia breaking her heart in the process. He tells her how he's been feeling himself for the first time in a long, long time.
The episode draws to a close with Lex who again tries to convince Lena to be on his side. He goes as far as to use the truth seeker to show he is not lying. Lena questions Lex on various things like his true intentions and if he will kill people. Eventually the two actually end up shaking hands which was quite the sight and agree to work together. Back at the DEO Brainy walks into Lex's office which is the same room where all the hero's gathered during Crisis and basically says that Leviathan is the true threat facing the world. Lex mentions how there is no information on them and needs some from the future. But that's the least of their worries as right now a doppleganger has surfaced on their Earth again and it's none other than Winn Schott. Lex hands Brainy a photo off him which shows him being arrested. It looks like the Toyman will be showing up next week as that is how the episode ends and to be honest this was a poor showing. While the various different versions of Brainiac-5 were cool to see especially how they were all acted overall it just didn't gel for me. Supergirl and co's disgust for Lex continues and with both Lex and Lena now working together hopefully that can springboard things back into the quality of last season's back half. As for now this was just a meh episode filled in what really has been a meh season thus far minus a couple episodes. I hope to see you flying high again soon Kara!
