Legends Of Tomorrow 5x1 : Meet The Legends review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Legends Of Tomorrow resumes it's regular scheduled programming as season 5 begins where Crisis On Infinite Earths ended. After the events of season 4 and how it ended it turns out that the Legends are now household names complete with commercials a plenty, people going wild for them wherever they are seen and even awards are being thrown at them. This leads to a camera crew coming aboard the waverider to film a documentary on just how the Legends do things from day to day. So that means right off the bat this doesn't just feel like any normal episode of Legends Of Tomorrow (When does one even feel normal at this point??) but it feels more self aware and breaks the fourth wall plenty of times mentioning how badly effects look to even talking about the crossover and how some of the group did not even take part. We get a montage of what the hero's have been up to while Crisis has been going on and Ava is up first. She has been fighting to keep the waverider and thus the Legends in business while Nate has become quite good friends with Behrad. Our new Legend who was briefly shown at the end of season 4. He is the brother of Zari who disappeared after the timeline was changed during the season 4 finale. Nobody knows he is the brother of Zari however as he is a pretty laid back chill character who honestly fits in quite well here. It's only a matter of time before Sara, Mick and Ray return to the waverider and they are greeted by a camera crew which Sara does not take kindly to considering Oliver's demise is still pretty fresh and she just wants to be alone with her friends. Characters like Mona, and Charlie are still aboard also although Charlie does take the time jump ship for a wild ride and doesn't appear again in the episode.
It's pretty soon after however that the Legends are put into business once again as a level 5 time quake occurs leading them to Imperial Russia 1917 where upon arrival witness a funeral taking place. It's the funeral of Grigori Rasputin but it ends not going as normal funerals do as Rasputin literally rises from his grave right in front of everybody. Back aboard the waverider the Legends each in their own unique way come up with a way of putting a stop to Rasputin who is now practically immortal and on a mission of revenge against those who done him wrong and as you can imagine..nothing goes to plan. There is something very important to come out of this scenario and that is Nate's memories of Zari being slowly but surely restored. Rasputin uses his mystic powers (hypnosis) and gets inside of Nate's mind leading to him seeing a woman with dark raven hair standing there. Nate can't quite make her out but does feel strongly for her and as it turns out this is Zari who we see again at the end of the episode but more on that then. John Constantine returns again but this time he's not alone. Thanks to Nora who is still a Fairy Godmother by the way he has an assistant. None other than Gary Green who has some redeeming to do after turning all villain last season. Constantine gets a call from a woman and he turns up to her home to find her son in completely possessed mode. Turns out Constantine knows the demon inside of the boy and they go for a drink. Yes Constantine brings a young kid to a bar where of course they get thrown out which admittedly was funny. Constantine questions the demon what he's doing and finds out that Astra who we saw at the end of season 4 actually do released all of history's worst souls back into the land of the living. This is why Rasputin has returned. Constantine tries to inform the Legends but Gideon is infected with a bug of sorts that Behrad has been trying to solve all episode long. Eventually Gideon gets up and running again just in time for the last ditch attempt to stop Rasputin from exacting his revenge on those who did him wrong.
The episode draws to a close at Rasputin's palace as aboard the waverider he demands the Legends attention and being the hero's that they are they all go to see him. A huge fight breaks out between every as the episode finally kicks into full gear. Rasputin seems indestructible at first but soon he is defeated thanks to Ray who sizes down and gets thrown inside of Rasputin from the mouth down. We see him inside of him before he super sizes up exploding Rasputin into tiny pieces in the processing screaming out ''Size Matters'' which can be his new catchphrase according to Nate which is accurate and funny. The Legends end up placing all body fluids of Rasputin in various different jars aboard the waverider. One even has his eye moving about which was proper gross. Remember the documentary at the beginning?? well it's premiere takes place as the episode ends with the Legends disobeying orders from the director as they say it's all been a ruse and that time travel is completely ridiculous. Behrad mentions how if they sneezed back in time that today's germs would destroy everything which was hilarious. The Legends get booed off the stage as Sara says they are all frauds. Honestly this ending was perfect but it doesn't end there no not yet. As everyone is boarding the waverider Constantine shows up and performs some sort of spell. He grossly drinks one of the jars containing Rasputin and steps inside of a circle before disappearing. Who knows where this could lead as the final thing we see is Gideon beginning a complete memory wipe. She mentions to Nate how she noticed a glitch during the season 4 finale. She shows it to Nate and it turns out to be Zari shifting in and out of picture as Behrad takes her place. Zari then shows up behind Nate in a hologram stating that if he is watching this then that means she is gone but she is still someplace and finally that she loves him. Utterly confused by this Nate asks Gideon to replay the hologram but doesn't get the chance to as Gideon says her memory has been fully erased and that's how the episode ends. So how was this episode?? well it was a lot of things. It started off all over the place jumping from scene to scene in a relentless pace. It did even out in the middle before finally picking things up again and ending on a high. All in all I'd say this was a real return to form for the Legends and while it still needs work to reach the highs of season 3 it's certainly on the right track. Legend Of Tomorrow won't air next week as Arrow has a two hour series finale but it will return on February 4th alongside The Flash. Until then Legends!
