Terminator : Dark Fate review

Schwarzenegger, Hamilton and Cameron. 3 names know for the Terminator franchise. With many years having passed since Judgement Day way back in 1997 and also many sequels that were lackluster to say the least can this franchise finally get back on track?? After stopping Judgement Day at the end of the second movie Sarah Connor starts the movie living life as normal with her son. It's all going a bit too well however as John Connor ends up getting terminated by the T-800, with the future constantly shifting and changing and now with no resistance leader in the future Sarah commits herself to killing any and all machines that she can find. All of this is established pretty early on and it's fine. Soon after we meet our new characters. A genetically enhanced human named Grace played by Mackenzie Davis and this movie's version of Sarah Connor Dani Ramos played Natalia Reyes. The two don't meet right away but it all ends up falling into place as Dani is mercilessly hunted at her workplace by a new Terminator named the Rev-9. Almost indestructible he can shift into humans and suffers little to no damage. A big action setpiece follows and again it's all fine and quite enjoyable.

Terminator : Dark Fate on the other hand attempts to do way too much at once. Making up a back story for Grace ( who is the best character in this by a country mile, Mackenzie Davis is plain fantastic ) is maybe asking a bit too much for many. Adding to that Natalia Reye's character just feels too similar to Sarah Connor in so many ways. Unaware woman who is supposed to grow up and give birth to someone very important in the fight against the machines. It's so much like the original but somehow worse in my opinion. Speaking of Sarah Connor Linda Hamilton does kick some serious ass throughout but again it all falls under the female empowerment act. It's fine but stems from poor writing throughout. As for Schwarzenegger it's when he enters the movie where it really goes downhill or at least for me. It's honestly shocking how much he is reduced to here. After killing John Connor he basically settled down, developed human feelings, got married and even has a family of his own. He went from killing machine to a merciful man named Carl.
I expected a lot more from Terminator : Dark Fate. With the old cast coming back and James Cameron even getting involved hope was big. It's not really bad but it's not really good either. Mackenzie Davis is the standout throughout as she brings it all especially during the action setpieces which for the most part are thrilling and exciting. Not so much can be said for the final act which is lifeless and lazy. This isn't the follow up to Judgement Day I expected and while it's not really bad it suffers from so many problems that ultimately had me questioning once it ended is it time to terminate this franchise??
