Supergirl 5x6 : Confidence Women review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Y'know every once in a while an episode of Supergirl comes around that makes me re-think everything I thought I knew about this show. Not only is this an amazing episode of Supergirl but it's one of the best episodes this season of any DC show. Beginning at the DEO and after apprehending Riproar at the end of last week's episode Supergirl and Alex continue to grill him about what he truly is and who he is working for. While talking to William they get a breach warning and finally after a few weeks the mysterious shadow figure who killed the assassin with spider powers shows up and tries to take Riproar. Supergirl and Alex fight her off but that's not the big issue here. The big issue here is that this shadowy figure is none other than Andrea Rojas. I mean talk about an action packed way to open an episode and get people hooked right away. The next time we see Andrea is when she knocks on Lena's door asking for her help in getting Riproar out of the DEO. Lena says they aren't even friends anymore but Andrea refutes with how they once were. It is here when we are taking back 15 years in time to the first meeting of Andrea and Lena at the school they both attended. Even back then Andrea was extremely confident. Lena on the other hand a bit shy and timid. Over time their relationship grew as they both liked the same movie (Titanic) and everything else in between. While out for a drink Lena mentions a story her mom told her about a medallion hidden deep in a jungle somewhere that has the power to surround whoever it touches in shadow. Years pass on and nothing is mentioned of this again but when we finally see Lex (Jon Cryer returns) ask for Lena's help in taking out Superman once and for all she goes to see Andrea whose life wasn't exactly perfect. Her father who was running Obsidian is on the verge of suicide as Lord Technologies have just announced new tech that will blow his out of the water. At their home in Argentina Lena shows up and asks Andrea to come look for the same medallion I mentioned earlier with her. She also mentions how she wants to use it to find Kryptonite before Lex does as he really has become only more and more unhinged.
It takes some forcing but Andrea agrees and the friends set off to find the medallion. Brought to a stand still Lena unearths a snake symbol which points them onwards. Andrea ends up falling into a pit which just to happens to have the medallion hidden in a wall. She goes to pick it up and as she does a man appears to her saying that once she picks it up her life will never be the same. Andrea does pick it up and when Lena arrives she blatantly lies to her friends face so she can keep it for herself. Back at her home Andrea learns of Lord Technologies new tech's failures and how Obsidian's value has skyrocketed. Could this be thanks to the medallion?? Lena's ex Jack who played a part in Supergirl back in season 2 reappears and the two head to London together. It's here where Lena sees Andrea who is sporting the medallion around her neck like some sort of trophy. Lena tells her that their friendship is over before leaving. More time passes and we see Lex again this time having taken Lena hostage much like we saw last season. With the Luthor name in ruin Lena tells Jack that she is heading to National City so that she can rebuild and make the Luthor name trustworthy again. In National City Kara and Lena meet for the first time but their relationship doesn't exactly get off on the right foot as Lena says its strictly business. Eventually she comes around and the two share a great friendship going forward.
The episode draws to a close back in present day as Andrea again asks for Lena's help in breaking Riproar out of the DEO. Lena agrees and uses her sense of control to help Andrea who again uses her medallion powers to get inside. Supergirl gets called away by Lena as a distraction as the DEO is left unprotected. Alex tries her best to stop Andrea who is sporting a really nice outfit but is unsuccessful as she releases prisoners. Supergirl eventually hears Alex calling for help and comes to the rescue but just can't stop Andrea from taking Riproar away. Back at Lena's and Lena demands that Andrea give her the medallion. She actually does and just as things look great for her and Russell (Riproar) he ends up getting shot and killed by members of Leviathan who are indeed everywhere. One thing they don't know however is earlier Riproar had confessed to Supergirl that he was working for Leviathan which will be vital going forward. The episode ends with Lena who as the medallion in her possession and Andrea who is told that she can never escape the darkness even though she doesn't have her medallion anymore. Leviathan will always be around watching her. Trust me when I say that my words don't do this episode justice. 6 episodes in and finally this season of Supergirl finally feels special. This story of flashbacks on Lena and Andrea's relationship was very much needed. It was a breath of fresh air in a season that has been lackluster so far to say the least. More episodes like this going forward and I just know Kara will be flying high once more.
