Supergirl 5x5 : Dangerous Liaisons review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
This week's episode of Supergirl begins with the announcement that Obsidian North's VR lenses are set to be worldwide. Andrea Rojas announces this from a dream scape like make believe world where everything seems perfect. On the outside and at Cat.Co Andrea demands that all employees focus on the launch right up until the day. Kara who hasn't told anyone apart from Alex about William being undercover and trying to expose Andrea Rojas plays along with Nia who seems disappointed about not being able to get anything on William. Kara says that not everyone is who they say they are even if William is still a giant jerk. Speaking of William Kara texts him and asks to meet. They two meet and Kara asserts herself by saying that she wants to be involved in the search for justice. William ends up agreeing after Kara brings him to the DEO. Speaking of the DEO inside Alex is interviewing one of the assassins from last week's episode. She says she doesn't know next to anything as she only gets her targets through the net and is paid it bitcoin. She does mention one name though Riproar. A man with extra limbs which William almost instantly reacts to when his name is spoken. Turns out William's friend was murdered by this same person named Riproar. William's friend is named Russell and it turns out he and Andrea were really close. We even get a flashback of William and Russell discussing her and the implications that will come with getting close to someone like her. Russell seems unconvinced citing that she's the one. At the DEO again Riproar's location is found and Supergirl goes to stop him. He shoots her with a gun that Brainy finds out isn't supposed to be made for another 100 years. J'onn goes and saves Supergirl who next seen recovering thanks to sun lamps.
At the end of last week's episode we saw that Lena had used the Phantom Zone projector to send Ma'fael'ak to her lab so that she can do tests on him. And that's exactly what she intends to do. It doesn't go so well as the Martian overpowers her but will cooperate under one condition. He wants Lena to destroy the barrier in his mind that is stopping him from killing his brother. If she does this he will agree to her tests. Lena agrees and the two get to work. Ma'fael'ak's mind unlike anything she's ever seen before Lena tunes in different frequencies with his mind as he take control of various animals from different planets. With the work done the Martian says he feels content now knowing that revenge will soon be his. Lena refutes and says that no it won't as she didn't remove the barrier at all (never trust a Luthor) as Ma'fael'ak rushes at her Lena's eyes turn green like his and she controls him to her own will. More on Riproar now and after learning that he is stirring up more trouble Supergirl and J'onn set off for a Satellite base in Antarctica. Why is he there?? well to melt a giant ice cap with his Fusion Cannon that will result in billions of lives lost. Supergirl and J'onn show up but are too late as he succeeds in melting the giant piece of ice. When asked who or why he's done what he's done he just responds with ''They'' told him to do it. Who are they?? Leviathan perhaps??
The episode draws to a close with a tsunami imminent and the destruction of billions of lives on the line. Brainy tells Supergirl and J'onn that if they can stop one of the gyser's from pumping out water that they could stop the entire flow of water flowing. They both get to work as they fly around the giant amount of water in perfect formation as anything else and they could get sucked in and suffocate. Back in Central City Alex who is supposed to meet Alex to celebrate a milestone in their relationship is too busy dealing with civilians on the ground as a giant tidal wave approaches. People are preparing for the launch of Obsidian's VR lenses which is set to launch in a virtual way. Dreamer is tasked with stopping the wave as everyone else is busy and finally she gets some serious screen time and jumps into action which was great to see. Supergirl and J'onn stop the gyser and Dreamer stops the wave. The day is saved as it was always going to be. Throughout the episode William had instances where he wanted to confront Andrea and tell her all of what he knows. But after learning that Riproar is none other than Russell he is convinced not only by this to keep quiet but also as he learns that Obsidian's lab was a target in the giant water attack. .Speaking of Andrea the episode ends as we see her get into a limo. Inside is the same old woman from last season's finale. She asks of Andrea's help and that's how it ends. Leviathan is coming it's just a matter of when and where. As for this episode? well again it was fine. Supergirl has struggled to get any form of momentum going yet at least in my opinion. Andrea isn't really that engaging as a villain. Ma'fael'ka and J'onn's storyline is easily the best thing going in season 5 so far. Even Supergirl looks a bit bored at times. Season 4 left a lot to live up to and right now it just really isn't delivering. Hopefully the trend can be bucked soon.
