Doctor Sleep review
The Shining is considered by many to be a classic in horror / thriller and it is no question. It's tension filled, anxiety inducing scenes can really torment and question one's sanity. So with it's sequel Doctor Sleep can it live up to the original?? starring Ewan McGregor as a now fully grown Dan Torrance who meets a young girl with very similar if not stronger powers that he possesses. He is forced to protect her from a cult like group known as The Knot who prey on children with powers to stay immortal. It's incredibly supernatural but it works and it works really well. What I most remember from The Shining was how it wasn't heavily focused on jump scares to scare the audience but rather tension and ambiance. Well that trend continues here as Doctor Sleep doesn't really have much in the terms of jump scares but relies heavily on tension filled moments and a constantly moving narrative.
Doctor Sleep is a little on the long side. It clocks in at just around 2 and a half hours and at points it does feel long but it's definitely worth sticking with. Ewan McGregor's performance is excellent and Rebecca Ferguson's villainous Rose 'The Hat' is borderline creepy. But it's young Kyliegh Curran who is the standout here. Bound to a connection with McGregor's Dan she is incredibly likable and a force whenever on screen. There's throwbacks abound throughout that only add to the ever growing mythos of The Shining and a constant heart beat sound that I found to be annoying at first as it was a bit overused but overtime I grew to accept as most scenes especially towards the end were truly heart in mouth intense.
Doctor Sleep is a horror movie done right. It's not perfect however due to some pacing issues and a few misplaced jokes but it is captivating in it's presence and characters. Kyleigh Curran is going to be something special that I can guaranteed. This isn't a perfect follow up to the 1980 classic The Shining but it's pretty close. With supernatural scares abound and even an underlying tone of friendship Doctor Sleep is an immense experience that deserves to be seen by all.
