Batwoman 1x7 : Tell Me the Truth review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Episode seven of Batwoman begins with Kate once again voicing over the scene. She wonders how Bruce done it all when he was Batman. Inside a restaurant everything looks normal that is until we're shown somebody looking down the barrel of a gun. Just as the would be assassin is about to pull the trigger he gets pulled away by Batwoman who then runs off as The Crows begin to surround the area. In the alleyway Batwoman bumps into Sophie again who once again says that she knows Kate is the one under the cowl. She even threatens to reveal all to Jacob Kane as she fears that Kate will only end up getting herself killed. Batwoman says that she will contact her later before disappearing. Back at the Crows HQ and Sophie's husband's mood about the entire situation shifts and changes as when Sophie does get the call to meet Batwoman she agrees to reveal all to him when she returns. Back at the bat-cave and with the help of Luke Kate learns of the gun man's next target. She also learns of his nickname / alias ''The Rifle'' a prolific killer in his field. His next target turns out to be a Scientist working on the same gun Alice is after which can penetrate the bat-suit. So Batwoman sets off to stop the rifle again but is thwarted by a masked vigilante which leads to a fight breaking out between them. The masked person turns out to be Julia Pennyworth daughter of Alfred which I was not expecting. Back at the bat-cave we actually learn a lot more about her as she tells of how she trained Kate upon Bruce's request and at how her feeling for her grew over time. Julia and Luke seem to be especially close as the two embrace while Kate's emotions rarely change.
With Kate dealing with so much not only in this episode but the whole season so far Julia turning up deems to be one of the least of her worries as earlier she had called on Sophie to meet and meet they do. What follows is one of the worst scenes in this entire show so far as both women sit down to dinner which was odd in itself the owner of the restaurant asks Kate to leave at first because she is wearing sneakers. Kate points out that someone else is wearing sneakers and that she isn't going anywhere, he refutes by basically saying that he doesn't want a gay woman in his restaurant. How does he even know Kate is gay is beyond me but it gets worse as Kate basically outs in front of the entire place. This felt out of place, out of character and didn't nothing to forward the scene especially as Kate just ups and leaves seconds later. This was the first time where I really did not like this show at all as it seemed to force Kate's sexuality so much. Which is perfectly fine but I feel they went about it wrongly here. We know Kate's a strong woman, we know how passionate she is about who she is and what she wants to do but this was wrong in my opinion. What follows makes up for that scene in a way however as we finally learn more about Kate and Sophie's days in military camp. First they both agree together to tell everyone about their relationship and whatever happens, happens. But soon after Jacob pays Sophie a visit and says that what she is doing is amazing and she shouldn't even have to make this decision but it very well may be something that she regrets for the rest of her life. So basically Sophie lied to Kate about not loving her anymore as Sophie herself tells Kate on the streets of Gotham that she owes everything to her dad. She choose her life but didn't choose Kate as she walks off. Back at the Crow's HQ and Sophie actually does tell her husband the truth about her and Kate and while he flips out at first he slowly comes around but is definitely still not okay with her keeping it all a secret. But that's not all Sophie does as she also tells Jacob that his daughter is Batwoman which leaves him stunned in place.
The episode draws to a close as Kate and co learn that the weapon stolen from Hamilton Dynamics is back in play. At an abandoned building Batwoman meets Sophie again who asks did she tell Jacob about her. Sophie says yes as suddenly Kate walks into the room leaving Sophie looking stupid at Batwoman who is Julia in disguise. What follows is a blast from the weapon which knocks Julia out of a window on the floor. The Crows rush in and take her away in the back of a truck. Kate picks up the pace and chases her them taking down two Crow agents in the process. She saves Julia and wonders just how she is even alive as the weapon was designed to kill Batman / Batwoman. As it turns out The Rifle was working for Alice and he gave her the essential part for the weapon but Alice switched it out before giving it back to him. She protected her sister and Mouse who had earlier killed a scientist by stabbing them to death also has a secret. He was Jacob Kane this entire episode and even played host to getting his relationship with Catherine back on track a little. Jacob knows nothing of Sophie mentioning Kate being Batwoman which I'm sure Kate will be glad to know even if why is a bit odd. The final thin we see in the episode is Alice and Mouse who both agree that they can't wait to throw the maddest tea party ever. And that will happen on December 1st as Batwoman takes a week hiatus to make up episodes for Crisis On Infinite Earths. Overall this episode was full of so many ups and downs that I have to place it right in the middle of quality. Until December 1st Kate!
