Supergirl 5x3 : Blurred Lines review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Can Supergirl bounce back after what I thought last week was one of it's poorest and most overall bad episodes in some time?? the episode begins in a club where we see a William Day talking to some man. He says that it's a bad idea to turn down joining us (could he mean Leviathan?) the man again says no and as he walks deeper into the club meets a woman. The next thing we see is the two of them in a bathroom kissing. The woman who is covered in spider tattoo's and without hesitation kills the man with a spider that grows from her skin and invades the man's body killing him almost instantly. Back at Cat. Co we learn that the man who was killed was actually a young up and coming doctor who Kara interviewed last year. Kara can't believe that a man as young as 33 just ups and dies from a heart attack which is being reported. Kara uses her X-ray vision on William and notices that his heart is beating insanely fast. This is seconds after he told Kara that he looked into what happened and nothing came back. He died of natural causes. On the outside Kara further questions William who walks away but is obviously up to something. Kara has other problems on her hands however as she has organized to have lunch with Lena for the first time since she told her that she is Supergirl. Kara flies to Dublin, Paris and Milan to pick up essentials for what she wants to be the perfect lunch with Lena and that's what it turns out to be..more or less. The lunch goes down a storm but Lena does have a quest for Supergirl. Lena needs Lex's private journals to continue her research and they are locked away in a secure location. Lena needs Supergirl to fly and retrieve the journals. Lena doesn't tell Kara what they are for though as they are purely needed to further Lena's research and work on the human brain / trying to eliminate a number of emotional defects.
J'onn Jonzz and his brother were the highlight of last week's episode for sure and that continues her as J'onn enlists Nia's help in trying to help him gain cracked memories back. J'onn give Nia some herbal Martian tea and the process begins. What follows is a roller coaster of emotions and revelations on just what happened to J'onn's brother. Named Ma'alefa'ak from a young age he was not able to use his powers like other Martians. We see him playing hide and seek with his brother and some friends. J'onn accesses his powers but young Ma'alefa'ak cannot which causes J'onn's father to place his son in isolation. As time went by and his anger only grew he sided with the White Martians which sent J'onn's father into a downward spiral of despair and complete emotional destruction for what he done to his own son. He failed his own son. He sent him away when he should have helped him. Don't forget that all of this is being watched by Nia and J'onn who look on in complete shock and awe. But the revelations don't end there as after waking up in the middle of the night in a panic Nia goes to see J'onn again and tells him that what she saw is going to change things..forever. Back inside of J'onn's mind we see his father sobbing over his actions and what he did to his son. A young J'onn is stood next to him and as he sees his father slip deeply into a depressive state he takes it upon himself to erase both their memories which is one of the highest sins of Martian culture. Shocked by his actions back then J'onn is overcome with guilt as not only did he erase his father's mind of his own son but himself too of having a brother. This entire storyline running throughout this episode was absolutely fantastic and alone made this episode worth watching.
The episode draws to a close as Supergirl and co learn the identity of the woman with the spider tattoo's her name is Caroline O'Conner and she was seemingly working with William Day on the night of the murder. Speaking of William we see him again sitting on a bench alone. A man walks into the shot and sits next to him saying he done a good job before leaving something behind and walking off. It's money so I'm guessing my theory is correct this really all is tied to Leviathan in one way or another. Something interesting happen when fighting Caroline again as just as she gets drained of her spider like abilities a shadow shows up out of nowhere and kills her instantly before Supergirl or Alex can even react. What was that they say which was exactly my thoughts too. The episode does end with Supergirl who retrieves Lex's journals for Lena but also with Kelly who is leaving National City after yet another run in with Ma'alef'ka who ship shifted into someone she knew only to betray her and awaken his powers to the fullest extent. Kelly is driven out of town by James who accompanies her leaving Kara & Alex to sort this all out on their own along with J'onn of course. All in all this episode was such a major step up in quality over last week. Nothing felt like filler which was good and the over branching storyline of J'onn and Ma'alef'ka's past was truly compelling for the most part. This isn't Supergirl at her highest but it's a big step in the right direction. Let's just hope it can continue as the weeks go by.
