Supergirl 5x2 : Stranger Beside Me review

Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.

The second episode of Supergirl's fifth season begins pretty much like last week's as we see Kara stopping a massive car crash from happening. Basic setup and that is what is wrong with this episode right from the get go. It's extremely basic. Soon after Kara's heroics we're shown Kelly & Alex having breakfast. Kelly informs Alex that she is allergic to Blueberries which Alex really overreacts to. Kelly says it's fine as they're still getting used to one another. Nia and Brainy are too having their own little issues as Brainy seems to be over compensating way too much. He brings Nia breakfast in bed, brings her orders of sushi at work and even orders pizza's for her. The two eventually work things out as Nia says to cool down on the food and just be there for her and spend time with her. This entire process was pointless and to be honest did nothing for either character. Just filler more than everything else. J'onn gets a lot more screen time here though and as he is still reeling from his brothers attack from last week we learn that his brother is actually a traitor of the Green Martians. He sided with the White Martians and was sent to the Phantom Zone for his crimes. He even has a White Martian with him to aid in the destruction of his brother and his friends. At Kelly's office she uses  Obsidian North tech to help J'onn's mind and ease his pain which was caused during his fight with his brother. She learns that part of J'onn's mind is completely broken and after delving inside further J'onn himself learns that part of his mind has been wiped. Back at Cat. Co Kara struggles working for Andrea Rojas. She puts Kara on fashion stories rather than the usual work Kara has to do. Kara is also constantly being under mined by William who finishes one of her stories. After getting a call to help with dealing with J'onn's brother William ends up following Kara to see what she's up too as she ups and vanishes stating a family emergency.

At the location where Jonn's brother was supposed to be which just to happens to be the sewers. Kara, Alex and Brainy are greeted by the White Martian who also gets in William's face. Supergirl tells him to beat it as they continue to fight it out. Of course they escape leaving Alex smelling like sewer water and Kara and Brainy making fun of her. At Lena's Eve makes her return as Lena has her hold up like she did Reign a couple seasons back. Eve apologizes for what she did to Lena and for siding with Lex. She said they made him do it and said that if she told Lena why and what she is working for that they will kill her. They is seemingly Leviathan I guess as I still think Obsidian North is just a front for Leviathan. Lena refuses to believe all what Eve says and after getting a visit from Andrea who accuses her of stealing her tech ultimately has to side with Eve. But she has something else planned for her..more on that later. While investigating another lead on J'onn's brother Supergirl is lead to an apartment where we see Alex inside. Turns out this isn't Alex but J'onn's brother once again who after knocking out Alex took over her identity as a ruse to fool everyone. ''Why are Alex and Supergirl fighting??'' screams out Kelly as the duo fight all over the city. The real Alex found by Kelly inside the same apartment where Supergirl met Alex. The fight ends with J'onn's brother shape shifting into Kelly. Alex has to make a choice in the moment and choose right as she shoots J'onn's brother who ends up escaping once again.
The episode draws to a close as we see Alex and Kelly once again. Kelly gives Alex an entire list of her allergies as the duo agree to be honest and be accepting of one another as they're still learning about one another. Back to Lena and Eve who Lena says she will be accepting of on one condition. Lena transfers her AI Hope into Eve who becomes Lena's very own AI person which was a weird way to end the episode as Eve has become Hope literally. Lena also says she is trying something different as Andrea is onto her now. If it sounds like I didn't enjoy this episode from what I've written then you'd be correct. I did not like this episode at all. This early on in a season a show shouldn't have filler but this episode felt so rough around the edges. The story with J'onn and his brother has some serious potential and while I'm sure it will improve right now it just wasn't fun, lacked that Supergirl charm and is a far cry from the high's of Supergirl season 4. Hopefully things pick up next week. Until then Kara!
