Gemini Man review
On paper Gemini Man's premise isn't all that bad. An over the hill hitman about to retire is forced to come face to face with a younger clone version of himself. In execution however...Gemini Man follows Henry Brogan (Will Smith) an about to retire hitman. Deemed as one of the best shooters ever in his profession his retire is cut short as while out fishing he meets an undercover agent in Danny (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who has been tasked with looking over what he does and where he goes. After Henry meets an old friend of his he learns that his latest victim isn't exactly who he was told he was in his file and there's trouble ahead. What follows is one of the most uninspired, uninteresting and downright bad movies of 2019. It's hard to take because the amount of star power on show here is stellar and with someone with a track record as good as Ang Lee behind the camera you'd expect a lot more.
Performance wise things aren't as grim as both Smith and Winstead are the glue that holds this whole thing together. They aren't amazing or anything but with two worse leads this could've been so much worse. It isn't enough to save the movie however as Clive Owen's villain is as generic and boring as they come and as for Smith's clone?? well he too is completely dull. Done with technology to make Smith look younger the entire process just didn't sit right with me. There is parts where it actually looks alright but then in others it's a whole mess that is distracting from what's happening on screen. The same can be said for the majority of effects throughout. Some are fine but some are so incredibly bad it's laughable. A bike chase through the streets, a battle in the catacombs of Budapest are all good in premise but the clone of Will Smith's character in particular looks so different to everything else going on as the effects become more and more aggravating to watch. And as for the ending?? well it too is as cliche as endings come as the story comes to a halt that is so inconclusive.
Like I said at the beginning on paper Gemini Man is a great idea. It's in the execution that lets it all down. Will Smith and Mary Elizabeth Winstead are good throughout but the rest of the movie is flat, uninspiring and just boring. Gemini Man is a complete and utter flop that isn't worth your time. One of the worst of 2019 which is a shame.
