Batwoman 1x4 : Who Are You? review

Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.

Batwoman's fourth episode begins a thief who has been stealing various valuables throughout the city. Kate narrates over the scene and says how hard it is to hide her new found identity as Batwoman. Speaking of Kate the first time we see her in this episode is in bed with Regan (the bartender from last week) the two have seemingly spent the night together and with nothing on the cards look set to spend even more time together. That's all cut short as Kate gets a call from Luke to come to Wayne Enterprises right away. Kate proceeds to come up with a god awful lie about a water leak and gets away saying that she will make it up to Regan. At Wayne Enterprises people from the Museum are inside the main office where Luke and Kate talk about this new thief in Gotham. Luke says she's stolen a number of valuables and that Batwoman was nowhere to be found. Kate remarks back by saying that she's seeing someone. That's not something Batman would do is just fighting to come out of Luke's mouth every time something like this is said and it's genuinely funny. So what's the emergency then? well the Museum in Gotham is having a grand party soon and want Martha Wayne's pearls as it's centerpiece on the night. Kate agrees to give the pearls and sets off to stop Magpie before anymore valuables are stolen or worse..people get hurt. With Luke's help and the aid of eagle camera's in Gotham Magpie is tracked down and the fight between bird and bat begins. It looks like Batwoman is getting the upper hand but it's short lived as Magpie uses her tricks to make her escape. Batwoman throws a batarang at her and as it returns to her she completely misses it leading to a priceless vase being destroyed behind her. This shouldn't have been funny but boy was it. The loon on Batwoman's face was like the vase pricesless!

We finally get to learn more about Catherine in this episode. After her run in with Alice last week it's all hands on deck this week as she sends her own guys to take out Alice. It doesn't work however and after being tortured her guys return and tell her that it's up to her to clean up her own mess. More on this later as it's a big revelation at the ending of the episode. After failing to stop Magpie Kate learns that she has stolen her aunt Martha's necklace which seemingly means she has a plan to disrupt the gathering at the Museum. Speaking of the gathering at the Museum Kate asks Regan to be her date for the evening before again having to lie her way out of her daytime stroll with her. Saying that she has electrical problems at Wayne Enterprises her way of lying definitely needs some work. Kate herself knows this as well as she struggles throughout the episode and realizes that it is something she is going to have to learn to live with going forward. I like this a lot. The duality of Bruce Wayne / Batman is always something that has been fascinating to me. I hope this issue continues throughout the entire of season 1 as Batwoman shouldn't be ace at everything she does. More on Magpie now and after last encounter with her Batwoman stole some of her tech and Luke who worked on them to figure out their use comes to the conclusion that Magpie has been using a 3D printer to make her tech. Inside her tech is explosive ink bombs that Magpie uses as replacement valuables. After getting information from Sophie Kate as Batwoman gets the location of Magpie's nest and inside finds out exactly what she's planning. Her entire nest is bonded with heat signatures and if Batwoman speaks the entire room will blow. With Luke in her ear Batwoman ends up sneezing and has to escape instantly. This scene was going so well until Batwoman sneezed which was plain silly.
The episode come to a close at the gathering in Gotham's Museum. Inside Regan meets Sophie as Kate arrives. What follows is much like last week a really awkward scene involving the before mentioned women. It's obvious Regan knows that Kate and Sophie's feelings for one another aren't entirely diminished. Soon after as the Museum is ready to showcase Martha Wayne's necklace the entire room goes out. Turns out Magpie replaced the necklace with a fake and in seconds it's going to blow. Kate who had earlier stashed her gear away in a maintenance room comes to the rescue and not only stops Magpie but saves everyone inside and out of the Museum. With the city now fully behind her Kate seems to fully accept her side as Batwoman. But before the episode ends she does inform Luke that she plans to get into real estate, buy various run down buildings and give them back to the community. An interesting idea going forward for sure. More on Catherine and with having to live with her guilt over the past becoming too much she confesses all to her husband. She tells him how she lied about finding Beth's skull and various bone fragments. Stunned by what he's heard he walks out leaving Catherine a broken down mess. After seeing this and taking it all in all that I could think of was is that is Catherine working for the Court Of Owls?? maybe not but it all seems a bit too odd for my liking. She's a wealthy citizen in Gotham, she lied about Beth's corpse being found. And she also has develops various weapons. Not to mention that her lying about Beth's corpse could've been to aid the Court as they raised Beth turning her into what she has become. Just a theory but one to think about nevertheless. All in all though this episode was again like last week really enjoyable. Like I said last week this show is bound to have haters but I'm enjoying it, it's far from perfect but it is finding it's footing ever so slowly. The duality of Kate Kane / Batwoman is great and the underlying tone of darkness is fantastic.
