Midsommar review
I really do not know how to start this review if I'm being honest. Midsommar is a lot of things. It's ambitious, disturbing and completely off the rails. Starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, Will Poulter and more Midsommar is essentially one big drug like trip. The main story revolves around a girl named Dani who has been struggling with family issues. Her sister who is bipolar goes completely crazy and threatens to end her own life along with her and Dani's parents. Distraught the first 20-30 minutes of the movie show the struggle of Dani's life problems and the impact it's had on her relationship. And it's in these first 20-30 minutes where Midsommar is at it's best. When at a party and the mention of going to Sweden by Dani's boyfriends'd friend for a trip to visit his family and community it is here where the movie just flat out dies. Or at least it did for me.
It is however from this point on that Midsommar is absolutely stunning visually. Wide shots, close ups even upside shots it's all breathtaking. After arriving in Sweden the group of friends are greeted by people of the small village. Dani feels completely overwhelmed by it all as they intake mushrooms almost right away to stimulate themselves. Speaking of Dani I gotta say just how amazing Florence Pugh is here. From beginning to end she is totally believable and really made me feel for her in both good situations and bad. Midsommar is a movie of three half's in my opinion. Firstly you have the before Sweden stuff where Dani struggles with her family, boyfriend and more. From there the second act we're brought to Sweden and the third act?? well it felt like to me that everything else that mattered was just thrown out the window. Hardly any mention of Dani's family problems get mentioned again. Instead an aura of something is not totally right with the people in the village and surrounding area is instilled. It's not bad just feels out of place, especially when a little over an hour ago the movie was so intense. By the time the ending rolls around it's more like a comedy / flamboyant horror rather than a straight out horror filled with many impactful scenes.
So overall how is Midsommar and is it worth seeing?? well it's hard to explain. You really got to see it for yourself. On one hand it feels fresh and unique but as the movie goes on it just feels pointless and to the point of where I wanted to walk out. I didn't I stuck with it and was rewarded with such a weird & disturbing ending that I don't even want to get into it. Midsommar is not for everyone that's for sure. It's great at times, disturbing at others and once it's over you won't be running out of the theater you'll stay and reflect on what just happened. Certainly enjoyable but not something I'd sit through ever again.
