Yesterday review

Have you ever wondered just what the world of music would have been like if The Beatles and their legendary music had never been written and produced?? well that's the premise of Yesterday. The new movie written by Richard Curtis and Directed by Danny Boyle. Yesterday is a pretty incredible idea on paper and while it does have some really good moments it also suffers massively from some soul crushing ones too. Starring Himesh Patel as a struggling musician and his manager Ellie played by Lily James. After a freak accident happens and all the electricity in the world goes out for twelve seconds Himesh's character Jack is hit by an oncoming bus as he travels home on his bike. When he wakes up in hospital and after going to visit some friends he seems to be the only one who can remember The Beatles. Like I said Yesterday is an incredibly interesting and ambitious story but it doesn't really take it any further than ''Oh The Beatles never existed'' I honestly expected more if I'm being really honest.

The performances are good here though like Himseh Patel who is incredibly shy and awkward to begin with. He's actually quite lovable though and is a great lead. Lily James who I've always been a fan of is good here also albeit a bit silly at times and seemingly is only shoehorned in here to provide the grand finale that is as cliche as they come. As Jack's fame rises so do his obligations and this is when Ed Sheeran enters the fold who is actually pretty good playing himself to be honest. He's also a bit awkward at times but I really think that his portrayal is probably how he really in real life. When Yesterday is funny it's great but when it's not it's painfully insufferable which is a shame. There is so many iconic Beatles songs belted out and it is these scenes which turn out to be the big highlight. As for the ending?? well it's as cliche as they come like I said.
Yesterday is a fantastic idea wasted on a silly romance side plot. It is a good tribute to the legacy of The Beatles but it doesn't really offer anything new and plods along to it's conclusion. Himesh Patel is a great lead and while Lily James isn't perfect she plays well against him. All in all Yesterday is worth seeing especially if you're a Beatles fan but don't be expecting anything to change or how we view the music industry as a whole.
