X-Men: Dark Phoenix review
The X-Men are back once more. This time for the final time on the FOX Studio banner. With the same cast from the previous 3 movies with some fresh faces thrown in for good measure can X-Men: Dark Phoenix close out the franchise in a big grand way?? X-Men: Dark Phoenix starts off with a young Jean Grey who thanks to her powers ends up crashing the car her parents are driving. This kills them both in a freak accident that leaves a young Jean without her mom and dad. Enter Charles Xavier who is again played by James McAvoy. He basically brings her to his school / home for the young and gifted. Years pass and Jean grows up to become a big part of the X-Men team. Their latest mission however seems pretty simple on paper but when it goes horribly wrong and Jean is infused with solar flare energy her life is about to never be the same again.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is a lot of things. It's an action extravaganza, it's funny (in parts) and it's also emotional. Sophie Turner returns as Jean Grey and while still not great performance wise she is a lot better than the previous movie. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are each as good as you'd expect as Charles and Erik respectively. Jessica Chastain's mysterious character however is not good and her performance is emotionless and at points completely cringe to watch. Now of course maybe that's how she was supposed to play the character but she isn't exactly all that interesting and has this wide eyed stare that can be so grating. Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult are good here too as the movie rolls on in a pace that is a bit flat at times. The first third is enjoyable with the space mission gone wrong, then you have the second third which becomes almost like a game of 'who can be all blame this on now?' it's tiring needless and will have you just waiting for the whole thing to end. Luckily however the third and final act is really great and saves the entire movie because before it happens it isn't heading in a good way at all.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix certainly isn't bad. It's enjoyable at times and having a fellow mutant that hits close to home is always an interesting villain choice. Some performances are good while others not so much. If this is indeed to be X-Men's final stand for FOX then it bows out with a small explosion rather than a big goodbye. Enjoyable but definitely not the best.
