Booksmart review
Booksmart is a lot of things. It's heartwarming, hilarious, devastating and emotional all wrapped into one nice package. Directed by Olivia Wilde Booksmart tells the story of two academic students and best friends Amy and and Molly. On the eve of their graduation they realize that they have focused too much on school work and have not lived enough. So they both set off to the vice president of their class's house. Molly who just so happens to be the class president is strong if a bit stuck up to start but is really quite likable. Amy is a lesbian and has a crush on a fellow classmate and the two together share the majority of the screen time together. Both are played to absolute perfection by Kaityln Dever (Amy) and Beanie Feldstein (Molly) together they share an almost telepathic bond and are a joy to watch as their night goes from pretty standard to wild and out of control.
Booksmart is a coming of age tale but there is so much here also that makes it so much more. First off there is the performances like I mentioned but it's also absolutely hilarious, is paced like a freight train and by the time the credit begin to roll you won't be able to wipe the biggest smile off your face. Now some might say it's a bit cliche and yes it is at times it also mocks those cliches in a number of scenes and running gags that hit their mark every single time. It also feels insanely fresh and witty while not straying too far away from the core of the movie which is the relationship between the two leads. Add in a cameo from Lisa Kudrow and more and Booksmart is one of the smartest comedy drama's all year long.
With June having just begun Booksmart has made a bold claim to being one of the year's greatest movies. It's a fine first outing as a director for Olivia Wilde. It's highly entertaining and will leave you grinning like a cat over and over again. Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein are phenomenal and overall Booksmart is a must watch that is destined to become a classic for all ages. This is one you just must go to see.
