Pokemon : Detective Pikachu review

Pokemon and humans living a like in harmony. Taking place in Ryme City Detective Pikachu tells the story of a teenagers search for his missing father aided by his Pokemon partner Pikachu. In Ryme City people and Pokemon live among one each other. Each person has their own Pokemon partner that they are with for life. Detective Pikachu starts off in a secret laboratory that right away you can tell that nothing good happens there. Inside we see Mewtwo one of the most strongest Pokemon in the world. What leads after is a breakout, chaos and impending danger. It is shortly after this we're introduced to Tim Goodman played by Justice Smith. A young man who grew up mostly not knowing his father. After learning of his dad's apparent death at the hands of a car accident he goes to his apartment to clean it out. Inside he meets Pikachu. Who he can not only understand but we learn that he was his father's Pokemon partner. The two after being attacked by drugged up Pokemon agree to help one another in an attempt to solve the case of Tim's missing father and Pikachu's memory loss.

Ryan Reynolds voices the titular character and not only is he funny the design and animation of Pikachu is delightful. His caffeine addiction is adorable and overall the bond both him and Justice Smith's main character show off is a joy to watch. It does however stumble at some points as some scenes just aren't funny and while the visual of multiple Pokemon on screen at the same time will be a dream come true for many people it's not enough to truly save the movie. First off there's the main villain whose plan while not really interesting actually makes sense and is fleshed out well enough. Secondly is the effects (apart from the Pokemon) some look truly awful as Tim and Pikachu take on a mountain of a Pokemon. That being said when Detective Pikachu is good, it's great and the two main characters like I said have a great bond and carry the movie to the highest of highs. But it suffers from plenty of lows also unfortunately.
Pokemon : Detective Pikachu is bound to entertain kids and die hard fans a like and will leave you with a smile on your face. It's quite fast paced and funny but suffers from some dodgy CG effects, it's main villain is cliche as they come and while Ryan Reynolds voice is charming especially when coming out of the mouth of Pikachu it's not enough to stop a movie that is a complete thumbs in the middle type of movie. Detective Pikachu is certainly enjoyable but don't be expecting a Pokemon movie for the ages.
