Legends Of Tomorrow 4x16 : Hey World! review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
The season finale of Legends Of Tomorrow's fourth season has come and gone and with it we're given a big tease to next season, the reuniting of friends and even the departing of another. It begins aboard the waverider as we see Mick sharing a beer with one of the magical creatures. All the magical creatures from this season are now aboard the waverider out of Neron's reach. Speaking of Neron he and the Fairy Godmother use Charlie's powers to transform her into a member of senate so that they can reveal that magical creatures are indeed real and are a big threat. Fairy Godmother turns her into Tugamo the giant octopus like creature from earlier in the season. The entire scene descends into chaos as Sara fights with the Fairy Godmother for control of her staff. At the end of last week's episode we seen that the dragon egg that adult Zari left behind at her childhood home hatched in front of young Zari. Well after paying a trip to her childhood school Nate and Zari see that the egg has indeed hatched and Zari keeps the baby dragon as a pet. The children even seem to like it but the teacher not so much as she immediately uses Neron's eyes app leading to the dragon being taken away through one of the Time Bureau's portals. Zari feels bad for letting the dragon get away not once but twice now as her and Nate head back to the waverider.
Nora Darhk arrives in Hell to aid Constantine and Ray after being told to do so by Gary last week. She gets dropped right in while still wearing that ridiculous outfit. She shouts aloud that she is here to find Constantine. Her wand lights up and leads her to John who is being tortured by the same dude who captured him last week. Nora enters the torture chamber and turns the guy to dust with the swing of her wand. Constantine gets let loose and says that the only way to get Ray's soul back is to get inside of Neron's vault which is a lot harder than you'd think. So of course he goes to visit Astra again who didn't quite help him last week. He asks her to help them get inside of Neron's vault and in return he will kill him as he has been quite the pain in Astra's behind. So it's off to the vault and after convincing the vault teller to let them inside all we see is coins. But they aren't just any ordinary coins. These coins are each named with some of the most dastardly people in time and history. For example, Genghis Khan and Joseph Stalin and Charles Manson. Astra takes some of the coins for herself as a way to revamp her career in Hell so to speak. Constantine and Nora end up finding Ray deep within the bowels of Hell but he's not alone. Surprisingly enough he is seen playing JENGA with Vandal Savage of all people. Yes! the big bad from the very first season of this show. He was sent to torture Ray but over time they have become quite good friends which is a bit odd given their history. But this was a genuinely nice cameo from Vandal Savage who stays behind as Constantine, Ray and Nora whisk their way out of Hell. Back aboard the waverider they go and just in time too as not only does Ray turn into one of those coins because Neron is still using his body, but all Hell literally breaks loose as Neron's plan finally comes into place. He appears on TV screens both in Hell and on Earth as he says it's time to ''Make Earth Hell again'' which leads to chaos and fear reigning throughout the world. Which is exactly what Neron wants as the skies fill with red clouds as portals to Hell open up and the damned rise.
The episode draws to a close with the idea of Nate making his dad's theme park for magical creatures idea a reality. Using the book from earlier this season that lets the writer make whatever they write down on paper come to reality, Nate uses it to create Hey World! and inside magical creatures and wonder await all visitors. Back on the waverider Sara, Nate and Gary dress up as Supergirl, The Flash and Green Arrow as a bid to entice people to go visit Hey World! in an absolutely hilarious moment Sara mentions that they asked the Trinity (Supergirl, Flash, Green Arrow) to come do this for them but they blew them off. To which Nate responds that they should've done the crossover. The fourth wall was complete rubble by this point. More on Zari now and after the dragon egg hatched for her younger self and with the creation of Hey World! her entire future changes. Her parents live in the future, the anti meta human law that we saw in season 3 never comes into place..and even her brother survives. Of course this means that once Zari leaves the temporal zone she won't exist to the legends anymore as none of what has happened over the past almost 2 years will have happened. So she stays aboard the waverider as everyone else goes to Hey World! where a show takes place. Superhero's vs Monsters. Sara and Nate complete with horrible cheesey acting for the crowd ask to get to know the various monsters better. So the Minotaur from earlier this season and the Orge enter and begin to sing in a sort of duo act. The crowd quickly turn on this as they want Superhero's not these monsters. As all of this goes down however in the crowd we see a familiar face. As per standard now it wouldn't be a series finale of any arrowverse show this season without The Monitor appearing. He sits in the crowd, munches on popcorn and looks quite frankly not amused by the Legends antics. The Fairy Godmother soon arrives and she has a friend with her. It's the dragon from earlier only now he's all grown up and ready to eat something..or someone. The CGI looks a bit dodgy here but coming from a show with this sort of budget it works as it only adds to the charm in my opinion. As it looks like the dragon is about to gobble up Sara, young Zari makes the save and gets the dragon to stop. The dragon then ends up eating Fairy Godmother before turning back into his younger self which was hilarious. But the madness doesn't stop there oh no. As earlier on the waverider Constantine had told Nate that the only way to truly free Ray and return his soul to his body would have to be why Ray sold his soul in the first place. And that is of course because Neron was going to kill Nate. Of course Sara objects to this but it comes to fruition as Neron appears at Hey World! and while it looks like he's killed Constantine it's actually Nate in disguise thanks to some Constantine magic. Zari sees this from the waverider and within moments turns up. What follows is actually one of the most heartbreaking / heartwarming scene this season all wrapped into one. As Nate lays motionless on the ground the camera pans up to the rafters where we see Nate and his dad. Nate says he understands now, that it is extremely difficult to go before you're ready. His dad says that once he let go of all the anger and pet up rage he found his happy place. They both say how much they miss each other as below something amazing is happening. Everyone begins to sing which Nate's dad started off by using his connection with Mick from earlier in the season to start off. Everyone in Hey World! joins in and the power of love infuses with the Fairy Godmother's staff to create a big amount of energy. Enough to not only bring back Nate but return Ray's soul to his lifeless body as Constantine sends the demon Neron right back to Hell. But would you believe it doesn't even end here as Zari hugs Nate who says that she shouldn't be here she says she had to make sure he didn't die. The camera pans around and turns to see that it's not Zari who Nate is hugging. But infact her brother. So in this new time he was the one who joined the Legends not her. He's even wearing Zari's totem on his hand like a watch. Nate seems surprised for a moment but then reacts to Ray who is back in the land of the living. So he seems to have forgotten Zari which honestly was kind of heartbreaking to watch. There's one more thing that happens before the episode truly ends and that is Astra. She puts some of the coins she took earlier into a machine and says that everyone deserves a second act. The episode ends as it looks like she has unleashed some of history's most vicious personalities back into the world. An interesting concept for season 5 if true. So how was the episode as a finale?? it was great. It was never going to be as good and as epic as last year's clash between Beebo and Mallus but this was an over the top finale that was funny and had some emotional moments to boot. A fine finale for a bit of a mixed season overall.
So in summary season 4 of Legends Of Tomorrow was a bit of a mixed bag. It had a really tough season to beat in season 3 that in my opinion is the greatest this show has ever produced. That's not to say that this season was bad in any means because it wasn't. The inclusion of Constantine really helped and without him present throughout I don't think this season wouldn't have worked at all. Some more new characters also got introduced like Mona who the more the season went on grew more on me. And Nate's dad whose story arc was incredibly heartwarming if a bit silly. Sara & Ava's relationship was the greatest partnership / duo on this show. Zari and Nate's romance felt out of place and random. The magical creatures started off great but as the season went on it got kind of sloppy and lazy. And as for Neron?? well he was no Mallus but he was an okay villain. Also the inclusion of Hell for the last 3 or so episodes was a nice change of pace which was nice. So overall season 4 of Legends was good. Not great but definitely enjoyable. The first half of the season easily being the better part of the season as a whole. Season 5 now apparently won't begin until early 2020 which means we won't be seeing this show again for a long time which is a bit of a downer. But that being said it will come around before we even know it. Until then Legends. Thank you for yet another fantastical journey through season 4.
