Captain Marvel review
After just over a decade since it's inception with Iron Man in 2008 the MCU finally brings us it's first female led movie. So does Captain Marvel live up to the hype?? Brie Larson stars as Carol Danvers. A woman capable of extraordinary abilities. She is from a planet far away and does pretty much the same thing every day. She wakes up, trains, goes to see the Supreme Intelligence which is a super powerful being not able to be seen by just anyone. After a mission goes wrong however her life is thrown literally upside down as she awakes hung up by her ankles being worked over by a group of Skrulls. Alien creatures that can inhabit any person they see. After a chaotic break out she escapes and after trying to leave the creatures spaceship in an escape pod crashes and ends up on Earth.
It's here we're introduced to a young Nick Fury (without his eye patch) once again played by Samuel L. Jackson. Agent Coulson also makes a return. After Carol crashes into a BlockBuster video store S.H.I.E.L.D is contacted and Nick Fury learns of the imminent invasion of the Skrull race. That's the jist of the story as I don't want to delve into anything further incase of spoilers. It's a good set-up though and one that feels fresh from each MCU movie before. So how's the rest of the movie then? it's rather brilliant to be honest. Brie Larson is great as the titular character. Her battle with her inner memories of her past self was the highlight of the movie for me and without I don't think I wouldn't have been nearly as much invested as I was. The big bad is also sorta thrown out the door here too which was even more refreshing. Instead replaced with Carol Danver's struggles to identify herself and her past memories. It's something new for the MCU that while nothing original in terms of storytelling is so good here. Samuel L. Jackson is as good as ever as Nick Fury and oozes charisma as previously seen.
So was Captain Marvel worth the wait then? without a doubt. Simply put Captain Marvel is one of the best MCU movies to date and offers so much more than any previous movie has in a long time. I haven't enjoyed an MCU movie this much since the very first Avengers. Brie Larson is great, The Skrulls are extremely interesting and the entire movie never takes itself too seriously but never forgets or loses itself throughout it's running time. It's only March but Captain Marvel has just set the bar incredibly high for best action / superhero movie of 2019. Watch out Thanos she's coming!
